MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Arrival
Begin the flare with progressive back pressure and keep it coming until the sink is arrested, rather than flying it on flat.
What happened: The nose was barely raised in the flare and little of the sink was taken out, flying the aircraft onto the runway. This pattern usually carries through to a firm touchdown with a noticeable sink rate.
Watch for: Vertical speed indicator: a smoothly reducing sink through the normal flare band, not a steady rate into the runway.
There are several things that can go wrong during the flare, carrying too much speed over the threshold, starting the flare at the wrong height and inconsistent flight control inputs, all contribute to a poor flare resulting in a hard touchdown or a float down the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,566 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,566 m of the 3,498 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 371 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 737-900 taxied from the parking area to runway 26L at USSS Koltsovo Airport, a movement that lasted 9 minutes and covered 2 nm.
The departure roll on runway 26L accelerated the aircraft to a liftoff speed of 163 kt, using a takeoff distance of 1,286 m (48 % of the runway). Local weather was temperature 8 °C, wind 7 kt at 280 °, with a 1 kt crosswind and a 7 kt headwind.
Climb commenced 1 mile west of USSS Koltsovo Airport, Yekaterinburg, and the airplane rose from 1,782 ft asl to 33,764 ft asl, an increase of 31,982 ft, over 22 minutes while covering 150 nm.
Level cruise was established 22 miles south-east of USHD Shadrinsk Air Base, Shadrinsk, and persisted for 36 minutes, during which the aircraft travelled 295 nm.
Descent began 3 miles east of Makinsk, Aqmola Oblysy, Kazakhstan, with the aircraft descending from 33,575 ft asl to 2,463 ft asl, a loss of 31,111 ft, in 21 minutes and covering 113 nm.
The final approach to runway 22 at UACC Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport was flown from the north-east, on a heading of 225.0 ° at 4 nm and 1,289 ft agl.
Touchdown occurred on runway 22, whose length is 3,498 m; the threshold height of 63 ft agl was above target, while the threshold speed was recorded at 150 kt. The aircraft touched down after traveling 375 m, at a speed of 149 kt, with a heavy touchdown rate of minus 637 fpm and a lateral deviation of 5.2 m from the centreline. Local weather reported temperature 16 °C, wind 8 kt at 149 °, a 7 kt crosswind and a 2 kt headwind.
The total landing distance measured 1,492 m, representing 43 % of the runway, and the runway rollout alignment was described as very good.
After rollout, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a movement that took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nm.
Overall, the flight covered a distance of 567 nm, required 93 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 4,575 kg of fuel.
The Boeing 737-900 began its final approach to runway 22 at UACC Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport from the north-east on a heading of 225.0° at 4 nm and 1,289 ft agl. The approach was assessed as stabilised at the 1,000 ft gate, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope and centreline all within limits, and the local weather was 16 °C with wind 8 kt from 149°, including a 7 kt crosswind and a 2 kt head-wind.
At threshold the height of 63 ft agl was above the target, while the threshold speed of 150 kt was judged good. The aircraft crossed the runway threshold and the flare progressed to a touchdown distance of 375 m down the 3,498 m runway.
Touchdown occurred at a speed of 149 kt, noted as a little fast, with a heavy vertical rate of minus 637 fpm. The touchdown point was slightly misaligned, being 5.2 m off the centreline, and the total landing distance measured 1,492 m, representing 43 % of the runway length.
Rollout alignment was described as very good, and the aircraft continued along the centreline to a safe exit after using the remaining runway.
To reduce the heavy touchdown rate, a slightly higher flare and a more gradual reduction of descent should be practiced, while maintaining the aim point about 300 m (1,000 ft) in. Fine-tuning speed control to keep touchdown speed closer to the target VREF will also help keep the landing within the optimal envelope.
