Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 7,021 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,057 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-MAX8, then departed from runway 04L at PHNL Daniel K Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, Hawaii. The takeoff distance was 4,136 feet, which accounted for 59% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 149 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 87°F and winds of 11 knots at 62°. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the headwind was 11 knots. After departing from the airport, the enroute climb started 1 mile northeast of PHNL, where the aircraft climbed from 1,061 feet above sea level to 12,958 feet above sea level, an increase of 11,898 feet in just 5 minutes, covering a distance of 19 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 10 miles southeast of East Honolulu and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 23 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 10 miles south of Maunaloa, descending from 13,003 feet above sea level to 2,446 feet above sea level, a decrease of 10,557 feet in 9 minutes, covering a distance of 39 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started again 5 miles south of PHWA Waikapu Airport Waikapu and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles.
The final descent began overhead Ma'alaea, where the aircraft descended from 2,386 feet above sea level to 1,352 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,034 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 02 at PHOG Kahului International Airport from the southwest, heading 35.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,288 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 02 was successful, with the threshold height being well above the target and the threshold speed being good at 144 knots. However, the touchdown point was 690 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 136 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -217 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 81°F and winds of 8 knots at 30°, with a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 8 knots.
The total landing distance was 3,776 feet, which accounted for 54% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. After landing, the aircraft took 6 minutes to taxi to the parking, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 99 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 35 minutes, with the aircraft using 3,207 pounds of fuel.
The Boeing 737-MAX8 aircraft successfully landed at PHOG Kahului International Airport, with a final approach score of 89.8%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the southwest, heading 35.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,288 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot successfully guided the aircraft onto runway 02, which has a length of 7,021 feet.
Upon landing, the threshold height was found to be well above the target, indicating a safe margin for the aircraft to touch down. The threshold speed was also good, at 144 knots, which is within the acceptable range for a safe landing. However, the touchdown speed was a little fast, at 136 knots, which may have contributed to a slightly higher touchdown rate of -217 feet per minute (fpm). Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 81°F and a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 30°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 8 knots, which the pilot successfully managed during the landing. The total landing distance was 3,776 feet, which is 54% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the pilot made a good approach and landing.
Finally, the runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, with the pilot demonstrating good skills and judgment in navigating the aircraft onto the runway and bringing it to a safe stop.
