MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,095 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,095 m of the 3,112 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,199 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, a British Aerospace 146-100, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at ZBYN Taiyuan Wusu Airport in Taiyuan, China. This process took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 31, with a takeoff distance of 860 meters, which accounted for 24% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 122 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 6 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 220 degrees. The crosswind component was 6 knots, while the headwind component was 0 knots. As the aircraft took off, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead the airport. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 3,589 feet above sea level to 26,249 feet above sea level, an increase of 22,659 feet in just 9 minutes, covering a distance of 14 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 147 minutes and covered a distance of 942 nautical miles. This phase of the flight took place 14 miles southwest of ZBYN Taiyuan Wusu Airport. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 12 miles south of VMMC Macau International Airport. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 28,059 feet above sea level to 5,634 feet above sea level, a decrease of 22,425 feet in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 25 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 8 nautical miles. This phase took place 5 miles southwest of Yung Shue Wan in the Islands District of Hong Kong. The aircraft then began its final descent, which started overhead Tung Chung in the Islands District of Hong Kong. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 5,593 feet above sea level to 179 feet above sea level, a decrease of 5,414 feet in just 5 minutes, covering a distance of 14 nautical miles.
The aircraft landed on runway 13 at VHHX Hong Kong International Airport, which had a length of 3,112 meters. The threshold height at 133 feet above ground level was excessively over target, but the threshold speed was good at 124 knots. The touchdown point was 878 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 113 knots. However, the touchdown rate was smooth at -110 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.1 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 288 degrees. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the tailwind component was 5 knots. The total landing distance was 2,109 meters, which accounted for 68% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking area from the runway, a process that took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,010 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 184 minutes. Notably, the aircraft used 0 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The British Aerospace 146-100 aircraft successfully landed on runway 13 at Hong Kong International Airport Kai Tak, achieving a score of 75.8%. The landing was evaluated based on several key parameters, including threshold height, threshold speed, touchdown point, touchdown speed, touchdown rate, runway touchdown position, and total landing distance.
The threshold height at 133 ft above ground level (agl) was found to be excessively over the target, indicating that the aircraft touched down slightly higher than desired. However, the threshold speed of 124 knots was within the acceptable range, demonstrating good control and management of the aircraft's descent.
The touchdown point was located 878 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation. The touchdown speed of 113 knots was slightly faster than the ideal speed, which may have contributed to the extended touchdown point. Nevertheless, the touchdown rate of -110 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, indicating a controlled and stable descent.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.1 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to factors such as crosswind or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 17°C, a wind speed of 5 knots at 288°, and a crosswind of 2 knots and a tailwind of 5 knots.
The total landing distance of 2,109 meters was 68% of the available runway length, which is a relatively high percentage. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled and stable during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the landing was not perfect, the British Aerospace 146-100 aircraft demonstrated good control and management of the descent, and the pilots were able to recover from some deviations to achieve a safe and stable touchdown.
