Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: speed below the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,300 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,300 ft of the 9,016 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,640 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 15L at KIAH George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport. The takeoff distance was 4,827 feet, which was 40% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 157 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 94°F and winds of 10 knots at 110°. The crosswind was 7 knots, and the headwind was also 7 knots. After departing from the airport, the enroute climb started 1 mile south of KIAH George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport, with the aircraft climbing from 1,126 feet above sea level to 38,666 feet above sea level, an increase of 37,540 feet in 23 minutes and covering 141 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 12 miles southeast of 4F2 Panola Co-Sharpe Carthage, Texas, and lasted 44 minutes, covering 340 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 4 miles northeast of MU56 Brown Field Broseley, Missouri, descending from 38,755 feet above sea level to 1,894 feet above sea level, a decrease of 36,861 feet in 23 minutes and covering 118 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 30R at KSTL St. Louis Lambert International Airport was made from the southeast, heading 302.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,361 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 30R was successful, with a touchdown point 304 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was a little fast at 140 knots, but the touchdown rate was fair at -276 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 88°F and winds of 4 knots at 135°, with a crosswind of 1 knot and a tailwind of 3 knots. The total landing distance was 5,064 feet, which was 56% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also very good. After landing, the aircraft taxiing to the parking from the runway took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 606 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 104 minutes. The aircraft used 10,025 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at KSTL St. Louis Lambert International Airport on runway 30R. The final approach was executed from the southeast, heading 302.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,361 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was within the acceptable range at 145 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 304 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is slightly beyond the ideal spot. However, the touchdown speed of 140 knots was a bit faster than the recommended speed, resulting in a touchdown rate of -276 feet per minute (fpm), which is considered fair. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway during the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 88°F and a wind speed of 4 knots from 135°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, and the tailwind component was 3 knots, which did not significantly impact the landing. The total landing distance was 5,064 feet, accounting for 56% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, considering the aircraft's size and the runway length of 9,016 feet.
During the rollout, the aircraft maintained a very good alignment with the runway, indicating that the pilots successfully controlled the aircraft's speed and direction after touchdown. Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down safely and rolling out without any issues.
