Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 11,780 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 734 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 10 at LSZH Zürich Airport. The takeoff distance was 3,978 feet, which accounted for 49% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 155 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 45 °F and winds of 12 knots at 30 °. The crosswind was 11 knots, while the headwind was 5 knots. As the aircraft took off, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead Kloten in the Kanton Zurich, Switzerland. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 2,502 feet above sea level to 36,364 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,862 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 130 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, which started 1 mile northwest of Chalindrey in the Grand Est, France. This cruise phase lasted for 29 minutes and covered a distance of 218 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 4 miles west of Berck in the Hauts-de-France, France. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 36,332 feet above sea level to 6,971 feet above sea level, a decrease of 29,361 feet in 12 minutes, covering a distance of 77 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started overhead Biggin Hill in the Greater London, England. This cruise phase lasted for 5 minutes and covered a distance of 22 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, which started overhead EGTF Fairoaks Airport Woking in Surrey, England. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 6,752 feet above sea level to 1,365 feet above sea level, a decrease of 5,387 feet in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 09L at EGLL London Heathrow Airport was made from the west, with a heading of 90.0 ° at 4 nautical miles and 1,280 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 09L, which had a length of 11,780 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 138 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 728 feet, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 133 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -302 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 12 feet from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 33 °F and winds of 5 knots at 30 °. The crosswind was 5 knots, while the headwind was 3 knots. The total landing distance was 3,333 feet, which accounted for 28% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 463 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 90 minutes. The aircraft used 8,364 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed on runway 09L at EGLL London Heathrow Airport, achieving a high score of 98.8%. The final approach was conducted from the west, heading 90.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,280 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was well-executed, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 138 knots, which is within the acceptable range.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's performance was satisfactory, with a touchdown distance of 728 feet, which is within the expected range. However, the touchdown speed of 133 knots was slightly faster than the ideal speed, indicating that the pilots may have needed to apply more braking force to slow down the aircraft. The touchdown rate was firm at -302 feet per minute (fpm), which is consistent with a controlled landing.
One minor issue was observed during the landing, as the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 12 feet from the centreline. This deviation may have been due to various factors, including wind or pilot error. Despite this, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the landing roll.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 33°F and a wind speed of 5 knots at 30°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots. These conditions did not appear to have a significant impact on the landing, as the aircraft performed well despite the slight wind.
Overall, the Boeing 737-800 aircraft demonstrated a high level of proficiency during the landing on runway 09L at EGLL London Heathrow Airport, achieving a score of 98.8%. While there were some minor issues, such as a slightly fast touchdown speed and a slight deviation from the centreline, the pilots' performance was generally excellent, and the aircraft landed safely and efficiently.
