Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,675 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,675 ft of the 9,191 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,551 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A319 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KDEN Denver International Airport, a process that took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 07, with a takeoff distance of 8,292 feet, which was 69% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 158 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of KDEN, it encountered local weather conditions of a temperature of 68°F and a wind speed of 0 knots at 205°. The crosswind and headwind components were both 0 knots. The enroute climb started 1 mile south of the airport and took the aircraft from an altitude of 6,372 feet above sea level to 30,072 feet above sea level, an increase of 23,700 feet in 13 minutes, covering a distance of 64 nautical miles.
After reaching the cruising altitude, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile south of Lux Field Hartsel and lasted for 14 minutes, covering a distance of 94 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 13 miles north of Castle Lakes Airport Lake City, and descended from 30,084 feet above sea level to 7,833 feet above sea level, a decrease of 22,252 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 67 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 03 at KDRO Durango La Plata County Airport was made from the southwest, heading 38.0° at an altitude of 1,205 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on runway 03, which had a length of 9,191 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 129 knots.
The touchdown point was 200 feet beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 123 knots, which was good. The touchdown rate was also good at -184 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 58°F and a wind speed of 0 knots at 359°, with no crosswind or headwind components.
The total landing distance was 5,424 feet, which was 59% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, a process that took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 234 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 58 minutes, with a fuel consumption of 4,954 pounds.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed at KDRO Durango La Plata County Airport, achieving a high score of 99.0%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 38.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,205 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a crucial aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed on runway 03, which has a length of 9,191 feet. The threshold speed was also satisfactory at 129 knots, indicating that the pilot had properly configured the aircraft for landing. The touchdown point was 200 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation but still within acceptable limits. The touchdown speed of 123 knots was also good, and the touchdown rate of -184 feet per minute (fpm) was within the desired range.
The local weather conditions were favorable for the landing, with a temperature of 58°F and a wind speed of 0 knots from 359°. This resulted in a zero crosswind and headwind, making the landing even smoother. The total landing distance of 5,424 feet was 59% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
The most impressive aspect of this landing was the runway rollout alignment, which was described as "perfect." This indicates that the pilot had excellent control over the aircraft during the rollout phase, maintaining a stable and aligned path along the runway. Overall, this landing was a testament to the pilot's skill and experience, as well as the aircraft's performance and handling characteristics.
