Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: gear still up and sink rate above what the glideslope needed.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,397 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,397 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 204 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
An A400M departed from Düsseldorf Airport (EDDL) after a 26‑minute taxi from its parking spot to runway 23L, covering roughly four nautical miles on the ground. The aircraft began its take‑off roll on a runway that measured 1,397 m, using 1,057 m—about 44 % of the available length—to become airborne at a speed of 147 kt. Ambient temperature was 15 °C, with a wind from 159° at 13 kt, providing a modest 4‑kt headwind and a 13‑kt cross‑component.
Climb commenced immediately after liftoff, with the A400M climbing from 1,044 ft above sea level to 15,000 ft in roughly five minutes while traversing 26 nm. The ascent was performed over the Düsseldorf area, gaining nearly 14,000 ft in altitude.
Cruising altitude was maintained briefly before the descent began one mile southwest of Schermbeck. The aircraft descended from 15,004 ft to 3,002 ft, shedding 12,002 ft in nine minutes and covering 43 nm. A short level segment followed near Bonen, lasting about two minutes and spanning seven nautical miles.
The final approach to Dortmund Airport (EDLW) was established from the northeast, with the aircraft aligned on a heading of 241° at four nautical miles out and an altitude of 1,470 ft AGL. Local conditions at the destination were again 15 °C, with a wind from 190° at 15 kt, yielding an 11‑kt crosswind and a 9‑kt headwind component. The A400M touched down on runway 24 at a speed of 122 kt, well within the target threshold speed of 125 kt. The touchdown point was 205 m down the runway, representing 47 % of the available length, and the aircraft’s alignment was essentially perfect. The landing was firm, with a vertical speed of –468 fpm, and the rollout concluded slightly off centreline by about 9.6 m.
After landing, the aircraft taxied back to its parking area in three minutes, covering less than one nautical mile. The entire flight covered 85 nm, lasted 26 minutes, and consumed 42,669 kg of fuel.
The A400M approached runway 24 at Dortmund (EDLW) from the north‑east on a final heading of 241 degrees, establishing the aircraft at 4 NM and 1 470 ft AGL. The inbound track was well aligned with the runway centreline, allowing a stable approach path that was only marginally offset from the ideal glide slope. The aircraft’s final approach speed of 125 kt was appropriate for the aircraft’s weight and configuration, and the descent rate of –468 fpm, while on the harder side of the acceptable envelope, was still within the limits for a safe touchdown.
Atmospheric conditions were favourable for the operation. The ambient temperature of 15 °C and a moderate wind from 190 degrees at 15 kt produced a useful component of 9 kt headwind and an 11 kt cross‑wind. The headwind component contributed positively to the reduced ground speed at touchdown, while the cross‑wind was well within the A400M’s demonstrated limits and was effectively managed by the crew, as evidenced by the perfect runway alignment at touchdown.
The aircraft touched down 205 m beyond the threshold, a distance that represents roughly 47 % of the available runway length of 1 397 m. This touchdown point left ample runway for deceleration and demonstrated good energy management, especially given the relatively high touchdown speed of 122 kt. The total landing roll of 658 m confirmed that the aircraft stopped well before the runway end, providing a comfortable safety margin.
Rollout performance was generally satisfactory, though the aircraft drifted slightly off the centreline, ending up about 9.6 m to the right of the ideal track. This minor deviation is not unusual in a cross‑wind environment and did not compromise safety, but it does suggest that a small correction could be applied during the flare or early rollout to tighten the alignment. The hard touchdown rate of –468 fpm, while acceptable, may have contributed to the slight lateral drift, as the higher vertical load factor can affect tyre grip and steering response.
Overall, the landing earned a score of 94.7 %, reflecting a high level of proficiency. The crew demonstrated solid airmanship by maintaining a stable approach, achieving an accurate touchdown point, and managing the cross‑wind component effectively. The minor issues observed—a relatively hard touchdown and a small centreline deviation—are areas for fine‑tuning but do not detract significantly from the overall quality of the operation. Continued emphasis on smoothing the flare to reduce vertical speed and applying a subtle rudder correction during the initial rollout would likely bring the performance even closer to the ideal, potentially achieving a perfect score in future evaluations.
