Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,675 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 437 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight on the Boeing 737-800 began with a 3-minute taxi from the parking area to the runway at PAVD Valdez Airport. The departure roll on runway 06 covered 945 meters, approximately 48% of the runway, before reaching a liftoff speed of 148 knots. During takeoff, the local weather conditions included a temperature of 3°C and a light wind of 3 knots coming from 179°, resulting in a minimal crosswind and headwind component.
The enroute climb commenced 1 mile east of PAVD Valdez Airport, ascending from 1,170 feet above sea level to 39,056 feet, covering a distance of 242 nautical miles in 39 minutes. The aircraft then leveled off for cruise 12 miles southwest of 2K5 Telida, travelling a further 1,010 nautical miles in 129 minutes.
The descent phase of the flight began 77 miles north of Bilibino in Russia, descending from 38,750 feet to 2,040 feet over a span of 13 minutes and 100 nautical miles. The landing took place on runway 31 at UESS Chersky, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 128 knots and a vertical speed indicator reading of -256 ft/min. The total landing distance covered was 936 meters, approximately 56% of the runway length, with the final touchdown occurring 438 meters from the threshold.
After landing, a brief taxi took the aircraft back to the parking area, concluding the flight which covered a total distance of 1,365 nautical miles over the course of 193 minutes. A total of 9,153 kg of fuel was consumed during the flight.
