Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,688 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,688 m of the 2,883 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 466 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at LFMP Perpignan-Rivesaltes Airport, taking approximately 7 minutes and covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 33, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 144 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 15°C, a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 320°, resulting in a 1-knot crosswind and a 5-knot headwind.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it began its enroute climb over the town of Peyrestortes in Occitanie, France. The climb took 16 minutes to reach an altitude of 33,664 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,536 feet from the initial altitude of 1,128 feet. During this phase, the aircraft covered a distance of 94 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile north of the town of Severac-le-Chateau in Occitanie, France. This phase lasted for 25 minutes and covered a distance of 169 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent over the town of Aunay-en-Bazois in Bourgogne-Franche-Comte, France. The descent took 25 minutes to reach an altitude of 1,569 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,127 feet from the cruising altitude. During this phase, the aircraft covered a distance of 108 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 25 at LFPO Paris-Orly Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 254.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,272 feet above ground level. The landing took place on a runway with a length of 2,883 meters, and the threshold height was good. The threshold speed was also good at 138 knots.
The touchdown point was 49 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 133 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -284 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.7 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 8°C, a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 198°, resulting in a 6-knot crosswind and a 4-knot headwind.
The total landing distance was 1,606 meters, which accounted for 56% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took approximately 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 379 nautical miles, taking 77 minutes to complete, and used 2,993 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at LFPO Paris-Orly Airport, achieving a score of 96.6%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 254.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,272 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was made to runway 25, which has a length of 2,883 meters.
The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct altitude as it approached the runway. The threshold speed was also satisfactory at 138 knots, demonstrating that the pilot had maintained control and was on track for a smooth landing. However, the touchdown point was 49 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended landing path.
The touchdown speed of 133 knots was slightly faster than ideal, which could have contributed to the aircraft's slightly higher touchdown rate of -284 feet per minute (fpm). This rate is considered fair, but it may have been more desirable to achieve a lower rate to minimize the impact on the aircraft and the runway.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.7 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a combination of factors, including wind and pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 8°C and a wind speed of 8 knots from 198°. The crosswind component was 6 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,606 meters was 56% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the pilot had maintained good control and had made a smooth transition from the landing phase to the rollout phase. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot had successfully brought the aircraft to a stop in a straight line, minimizing the risk of any further deviations from the centerline.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score of 96.6%. However, there were some minor deviations from the ideal landing parameters, including a slightly fast touchdown speed and a misaligned runway touchdown position.
