Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,467 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,467 m of the 3,052 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,619 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A320, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at James M Cox Dayton International Airport, which took approximately 6 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 36, and the takeoff distance was 881 meters, which accounted for 34% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 151 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile north of the airport, rising from an altitude of 1,988 feet above sea level to 15,985 feet above sea level, an increase of 13,997 feet in just 5 minutes, covering a distance of 26 nautical miles. The climb took place over the state of Ohio, with the aircraft passing over the city of Dayton.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile northwest of Camden, Ohio, and lasted for 11 minutes, covering a distance of 64 nautical miles. This phase of the flight allowed the aircraft to reach a stable cruising altitude and speed.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent 4 miles northwest of the 81KY Hi Rise Farm Airport in New Liberty, Kentucky. The descent took place from an altitude of 15,822 feet above sea level to 1,758 feet above sea level, a decrease of 14,064 feet in 11 minutes, covering a distance of 43 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 35L at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport took place from the south, with the aircraft heading 346.0 degrees at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,262 feet above ground level. The landing took place on a runway with a length of 3,052 meters, and the threshold height was significantly above the target, but the threshold speed was good at 138 knots.
The touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway, and the touchdown speed was good at 126 knots. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -262 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 12.7 meters from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 12.2 meters from the centerline.
The total landing distance was 2,360 meters, which accounted for 77% of the runway. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took approximately 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 140 nautical miles, and the flight took 37 minutes, using 1,602 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed on runway 35L at KSDF Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, but the landing was not without its challenges. The final approach was initiated from the south, heading 346.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,262 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's performance during the landing was evaluated, and it scored 73.7%.
One of the notable issues during the landing was the threshold height, which was significantly above the target height at 99 feet agl. However, the threshold speed was satisfactory at 138 knots. The touchdown point was located very far down the runway, using more than 50% of the available runway. The touchdown speed of 126 knots was within the acceptable range, but the touchdown rate of -262 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair.
The runway touchdown position was also misaligned by 12.7 meters from the centerline, which could have contributed to the long touchdown point. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 14°C. The total landing distance of 2,360 meters was 77% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft had sufficient runway remaining for safe braking.
During the rollout, the aircraft's alignment was slightly misaligned by 12.2 meters from the centerline. This could have been a result of the initial misalignment during touchdown. Overall, while the landing was not perfect, the aircraft's performance was satisfactory, and the crew was able to bring the aircraft to a safe stop.
