Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,908 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,908 m of the 3,661 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 759 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KBIL Billings Logan International Airport. This process took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 28R, with a takeoff distance of 1,744 meters, which was 55% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 156 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Billings, it began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northwest of the airport. The climb took 20 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from 4,192 feet above sea level to 36,007 feet, an increase of 31,814 feet. The climb covered a distance of 115 nautical miles. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 36 miles southwest of the Luckinbill Airstrip in Cody, Montana. This cruise phase lasted for 20 minutes and covered 124 nautical miles.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it began its enroute descent, starting 1 mile east of the Bancroft Municipal Airport in Idaho. The descent took 21 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 35,978 feet to 5,649 feet, a decrease of 30,329 feet. The descent covered a distance of 112 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered its final approach to runway 16L at KSLC Salt Lake City International Airport, approaching from the north at a heading of 175.0 degrees.
The final approach was made at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,419 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 16L, which had a length of 3,661 meters. The threshold height was above the target, and the threshold speed was slightly above target at 146 knots. The touchdown point was 341 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 132 knots, which was good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -205 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.7 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 2 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 14 knots at 140 degrees. The crosswind was 8 knots, and the headwind was 11 knots. The total landing distance was 1,825 meters, which was 50% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking 8 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 359 nautical miles, taking 74 minutes, and the aircraft used 2,942 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at Salt Lake City International Airport (KSLC) on runway 16L, achieving a score of 91.3%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north, heading 175.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,419 feet above ground level (agl).
During the final approach, the aircraft's speed and altitude were closely monitored. The threshold height at 63 feet agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft was slightly higher than desired at the point of touchdown. However, the threshold speed of 146 knots was only slightly above the target, suggesting that the pilot maintained a good control over the aircraft's speed.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was recorded at 132 knots, which was within the acceptable range. The touchdown rate of -205 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, indicating that the aircraft's descent was not as smooth as desired. The touchdown point was 341 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may have been due to the slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position by 4.7 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 2°C and a wind speed of 14 knots from 140°. The crosswind component was 8 knots, while the headwind component was 11 knots. These conditions may have contributed to the slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position.
The total landing distance of 1,825 meters was 50% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft landed safely within the available runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained a stable and controlled descent during the landing phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a score of 91.3% despite some minor deviations from the target parameters.
