Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,648 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,648 m of the 2,753 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 379 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 23 at EDDH Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,706 meters, which accounted for 61% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 169 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 7 knots at 169 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 6 knots and a headwind of 3 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile northwest of Winterhude, a suburb in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Germany. The climb started from an altitude of 1,085 feet above sea level and reached a maximum altitude of 34,367 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,282 feet in 26 minutes, covering a distance of 172 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 1 mile northeast of Bucha, a town in the state of Thuringia, Germany. This phase of the flight lasted for 125 minutes and covered a distance of 540 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 6 miles east of Stolac, a town in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The descent from 34,423 feet above sea level to 1,406 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,017 feet, took 20 minutes and covered a distance of 118 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 17 at LATI Tirana International Airport Mother Teresa was made from the north, heading 174.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,279 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 17 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 380 meters, which was good. However, the touchdown speed of 146 knots was slightly above the target speed, and the touchdown rate was hard at -404 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 3 knots at 160 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,567 meters, which accounted for 57% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the taxiing to the parking from the runway took 5 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 838 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 128 minutes. The aircraft used 5,587 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at LATI Tirana International Airport Mother Teresa, achieving a score of 97.3%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the north, heading 174.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,279 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was made to runway 17, which has a length of 2,753 meters.
The landing was executed with good threshold height, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct altitude as it touched down on the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 150 knots, which may have contributed to a slightly faster touchdown speed. The touchdown distance of 380 meters was considered good, but the touchdown speed of 146 knots was a little fast, which could have resulted in a harder touchdown.
The touchdown rate of -404 feet per minute (fpm) was classified as hard, which may have been due to the slightly fast touchdown speed. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway as it touched down. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 10°C, with a wind speed of 3 knots at 160°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 3 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,567 meters was 57% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway as it rolled out after touchdown. Overall, the landing was executed well, with the aircraft achieving a high score of 97.3%.
