Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,737 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 453 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was conducted in an Aeroprakt A-32 Vixxen, a pioneering aircraft known for its exceptional performance. The departure roll took place on runway 30 at EGPK Glasgow Prestwick Airport, with a takeoff distance of just 35 meters, which is only 1% of the runway's length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 49 knots, demonstrating its impressive acceleration capabilities.
The local weather conditions at the time of the flight were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a gentle wind blowing at 2 knots from a direction of 270 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 2 knots, which presented a moderate challenge for the pilot. Despite these conditions, the aircraft performed exceptionally well, showcasing its stability and maneuverability.
The flight pattern began with a right-hand entry onto the runway, with the aircraft completing this maneuver in less than 1 nautical mile in just 26 seconds. The subsequent right-hand pattern crosswind was completed in an impressive 19 seconds, further demonstrating the aircraft's agility. The pilot then executed a smooth pattern downwind turn, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile at an angle of 45 degrees to the runway.
As the aircraft continued its pattern, it flew a downwind leg of 2 nautical miles in 58 seconds, followed by a base leg turn that covered a distance of 1 nautical mile at an angle of 45 degrees to the runway. The final turn was completed in just 47 seconds, setting the stage for a smooth final approach.
The final approach was conducted from the south-east, with the aircraft flying at a heading of 302.0 degrees at an altitude of 294 feet above ground level (agl) and a distance of 0 nautical miles from the runway. The landing on runway 30 was executed with precision, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 37 knots and a distance of 450 meters. The touchdown rate was an impressive -88 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions remained the same during the landing, with a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind blowing at 2 knots from a direction of 270 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 2 knots, presenting a moderate challenge for the pilot. Despite these conditions, the aircraft performed exceptionally well, with a total landing distance of 543 meters, which is only 20% of the runway's length.
The runway rollout alignment was perfect, with the aircraft coming to a stop in a straight line. The total flight distance was 6 nautical miles, which was completed in just 5 minutes. The aircraft used a mere 1 kilogram of fuel during the flight, demonstrating its exceptional efficiency. Overall, the flight was a testament to the Aeroprakt A-32 Vixxen's impressive performance capabilities and its ability to handle challenging weather conditions.
The Aeroprakt A-32 Vixxen, a pioneering aircraft, successfully landed at EGPK Glasgow Prestwick Airport on runway 30. The aircraft approached the runway from the south east, heading 302.0° at an altitude of 294 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway threshold. The landing was executed with a high degree of precision, as evident from the very good runway touchdown alignment.
However, there were some areas of concern during the landing. The threshold height at 92 ft agl was significantly above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been higher than desired when reaching the runway threshold. Additionally, the threshold speed was excessively high at 46 kt, which could have put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear and potentially led to a longer landing roll.
Despite these issues, the touchdown distance was good at 450 meters, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain control and touch down relatively close to the runway threshold. However, the touchdown speed of 37 kt was fast, which could have resulted in a longer landing roll and potentially increased the risk of overrunning the runway. On the other hand, the touchdown rate of -88 fpm was excellent, indicating that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact of landing smoothly.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C and a gentle headwind of 2 kt at 270°. The crosswind was minimal at 1 kt, which reduced the risk of the aircraft being blown off course during the landing. The total landing distance of 543 meters was 20% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop relatively quickly after touchdown.
The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain control and direction during the landing roll. Overall, while there were some areas of concern during the landing, the Aeroprakt A-32 Vixxen demonstrated its ability to land safely and efficiently at EGPK Glasgow Prestwick Airport.
