Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,560 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,445 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an A21N, then departed from runway 28L at KPDX Portland International Airport. The takeoff distance was 5,738 feet, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 166 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 45°F and a wind speed of 0 knots at 0 degrees. There was no crosswind or headwind. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile east of Bridgeton, Oregon, and ascended from 1,027 feet above sea level to 34,791 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,764 feet, in 24 minutes and covering 148 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 18 miles east of the 42OR Shotgun Ranch Airstrip Post in Oregon. This phase lasted for 69 minutes and covered 575 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 19 miles southeast of L50 Tuweep Tuweep in Arizona. The descent took 33 minutes and covered 166 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 35,018 feet above sea level to 2,443 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,576 feet.
The final approach to runway 08 at KPHX Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was made from the west, with a heading of 90.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,313 feet above ground level. The landing was executed on runway 08, which had a length of 10,560 feet. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 57°F and a wind speed of 0 knots at 0 degrees, with no crosswind or headwind.
The touchdown speed was 131 knots, which was good, and the touchdown rate was perfect at 27 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was also very good. The total landing distance was 3,288 feet, which accounted for 31% of the runway. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 896 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 135 minutes. The aircraft used 12,320 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The aircraft, identified as an A21N, successfully landed at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (KPHX) with an impressive score of 98.7%. The final approach to runway 08 was initiated from the west, with a heading of 90.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,313 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft's performance during the landing was exemplary, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 137 knots. This indicates that the pilot maintained a stable and controlled approach, ensuring a smooth transition to the runway. The touchdown distance of 1,444 feet was also within acceptable limits, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's descent and speed.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was recorded at 131 knots, which is a good indication of the pilot's control and ability to maintain a stable approach. The touchdown rate of 27 feet per minute (fpm) was perfect, signifying a smooth and controlled touchdown. The runway touchdown alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot maintained a stable and aligned approach to the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 57°F and no wind. This lack of wind made the landing even more challenging, as it required the pilot to maintain a stable approach and touchdown without any external factors affecting the aircraft's movement. The total landing distance of 3,288 feet was 31% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase, ensuring a stable and safe exit from the runway. Overall, the landing was a testament to the pilot's skill and experience, as well as the aircraft's performance and handling characteristics.
