Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,387 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 219 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
LOWI Innsbruck Airport served as the departure point for the Airbus A321 as it began its journey. Taxiing from the parking area to the runway took approximately 7 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then rolled down runway 08, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 160 kt. The takeoff distance of 1,189 meters represented 63% of the runway length, with a local temperature of 16 °C and wind conditions of 7 kt at 60°, resulting in a 6 kt headwind.
As the aircraft climbed to cruising altitude, it passed overhead Innsbruck, ascending from 2,953 feet to 37,009 feet in 24 minutes, covering a distance of 149 nautical miles. The climb rate was steady, with a total increase of 34,056 feet. The aircraft then entered a level cruise, maintaining an altitude of 37,009 feet for 14 minutes as it covered 112 nautical miles. The descent phase began 4 miles north east of Starigrad, with the aircraft descending from 37,034 feet to 4,455 feet in 7 minutes, covering 70 nautical miles. The flight continued with multiple level cruises and descents, with the final approach initiated 3 miles south west of Grohote.
The Airbus A321 touched down on runway 05 at LDSP Split Airport, with a touchdown distance of 221 meters and a speed of 134 kt. The touchdown rate was high at -523 fpm, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline. The total landing distance was 1,259 meters, representing 53% of the runway length. Following a short taxiing period, the aircraft arrived at the parking area, having covered a total distance of 383 nautical miles and consumed 3,710 kg of fuel. The flight duration was 67 minutes.
The aircraft touched down on runway 05 at LDSP Split Airport, with a threshold height that met expectations. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target, registering 138 kt. Despite this, the touchdown distance was satisfactory at 221 m, indicating a well-executed flare. The touchdown speed of 134 kt was a bit faster than desired, contributing to a hard touchdown rate of -523 fpm.
The aircraft's alignment with the runway centreline was not ideal, with a touchdown position 8.0 m off-centre. This misalignment persisted during the rollout phase, with the aircraft deviating 7.7 m from the centreline. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 11 °C and a gentle headwind of 4 kt, did not appear to significantly impact the landing. The crosswind component was minimal, at 1 kt.
The overall performance of the landing was satisfactory, with a total landing distance of 1,259 m, representing 53% of the runway length. While there were some areas for improvement, such as the touchdown speed and alignment, the aircraft's handling and control were generally good. The final score of 93.5% reflects a solid performance, with room for refinement in certain aspects of the landing.
