Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,643 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,086 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Piper PA-24-250 Comanche, then departed from runway 21 at EKRK Copenhagen Roskilde Airport. The takeoff distance was 199 meters, which accounted for 13% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 67 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 16°C, with a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 299°. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 0 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, which started overhead EKRK Copenhagen Roskilde Airport. The climb took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles, with an increase in altitude from 366 feet above sea level to 2,100 feet above sea level, a total increase of 1,734 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 50 minutes and covered a distance of 113 nautical miles. This phase began 1 mile southeast of Svogerslev, located in the Region Sjaelland, Denmark. The final approach to runway 26R at EKYT Aalborg Airport was made from the east, with a heading of 266.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,734 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 26R at EKYT Aalborg Airport was notable for several factors. The threshold height at 109 feet above ground level was excessively over target, and the threshold speed was excessively high at 99 knots. However, the touchdown point was 606 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed of 49 knots was good. The touchdown rate was smooth at -117 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C, with a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 230°. This resulted in a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 5 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,200 meters, which accounted for 45% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took approximately 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 120 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 59 minutes. The aircraft used 45 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Piper PA-24-250 Comanche aircraft successfully landed at EKYT Aalborg Airport, with a score of 72.9%. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 266.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,734 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft was on a steady course for runway 26R, which has a length of 2,643 meters.
Upon landing, the aircraft exceeded the target threshold height by 109 feet agl, indicating a slightly higher-than-desired approach. Additionally, the threshold speed was excessively high at 99 knots, suggesting that the pilot may have been able to flare the aircraft more effectively to reduce the touchdown speed. However, the touchdown speed of 49 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -117 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, indicating a well-controlled descent.
The touchdown point was located 606 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the intended landing spot. This may have been due to the pilot's decision to extend the flare or the aircraft's response to the crosswind conditions. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C, a wind speed of 6 knots from 230°, with a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 5 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,200 meters was 45% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, while there were some areas for improvement, the pilot demonstrated good control and decision-making skills during the landing, resulting in a successful touchdown.
