Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,169 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 595 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 35R at Calgary International Airport (CYYC). The takeoff distance was 3,420 feet, which accounted for 24% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 152 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 41 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 21 knots from a direction of 340 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 7 knots and a headwind of 19 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile northeast of CYYC, rising from an altitude of 4,638 feet above sea level to 16,319 feet above sea level in 6 minutes, covering a distance of 26 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 4 miles east of Bishell's Airport (CGB2) and lasted for 7 minutes. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 42 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 5 miles east of Red Deer, Alberta, and involved a decrease in altitude from 16,278 feet above sea level to 3,689 feet above sea level in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 58 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 30 at Edmonton International Airport (CYEG) was made from the southeast, with the aircraft heading 315.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,352 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was successful, with a touchdown speed of 132 knots and a touchdown distance of 591 feet. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 36 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 20 knots from a direction of 310 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 20 knots. The total landing distance was 3,722 feet, which accounted for 37% of the runway. The total flight distance was 135 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 44 minutes. The aircraft used 3,625 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Edmonton International Airport (CYEG) on runway 30, achieving a high score of 99.3%. The final approach was initiated from the southeast, heading 315.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,352 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft's approach and landing performance were satisfactory, with a good threshold height and speed of 137 knots. The touchdown distance of 591 feet was also within acceptable limits, and the touchdown speed of 132 knots was well-controlled. However, the touchdown rate of -287 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, indicating that the aircraft may have touched down slightly harder than desired.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 36°F and a wind speed of 20 knots from 310°. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 20 knots, which the pilots effectively managed during the landing. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway centerline at touchdown.
The total landing distance of 3,722 feet was 37% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase and brought it to a stop safely.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the pilots demonstrating good control and management of the aircraft throughout the approach and landing phases. The high score of 99.3% reflects the excellent performance of the pilots and the aircraft.
