Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,585 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,585 ft of the 10,034 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,237 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 07L at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The takeoff distance was 7,037 feet, which accounted for 69% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 169 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 120 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile east of the airport, rising from an altitude of 2,097 feet above sea level to 35,009 feet above sea level. This climb phase covered a distance of 187 nautical miles and took 26 minutes to complete. The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, which started 4 miles southeast of Lordsburg Municipal Airport in New Mexico. This phase of the flight lasted for 149 minutes and covered a distance of 1,302 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent 65 miles west of Indian Rocks Beach in Florida. The descent phase took 29 minutes to complete and covered a distance of 176 nautical miles, during which the aircraft dropped from an altitude of 35,031 feet above sea level to 1,447 feet above sea level. The final approach to runway 17R at Orlando International Airport was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 180 degrees at an altitude of 1,346 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing on runway 17R was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 142 knots and a distance of 1,245 feet. The touchdown rate was firm at -378 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 73 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 250 degrees.
Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 1,678 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 226 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 22,547 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at KMCO Orlando International Airport on runway 17R, achieving a high score of 97.5%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north, heading 180.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,346 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a steady course, ensuring a precise final approach to the runway.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed on the runway with a threshold height that was considered good. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 145 kt, registering at 146 kt. Despite this minor deviation, the touchdown distance was satisfactory at 1,245 feet, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The touchdown speed of 142 kt was slightly faster than the target speed, but the touchdown rate of -378 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting a controlled and stable landing. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilot's skill and precision in navigating the aircraft to the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 73°F and a gentle wind of 3 kt at 250°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 kt, while the headwind component was 1 kt, providing a relatively calm environment for the landing.
The total landing distance of 5,324 feet was 53% of the runway length, indicating a controlled and efficient landing. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control of the aircraft during the post-landing phase. Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down safely and efficiently on the runway.
