Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 4,684 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 430 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 27 at FLMF Mfuwe Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,201 meters, which accounted for 55% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 150 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 19°C, a wind speed of 1 knot at 237°, with no crosswind and a headwind of 1 knot.
As the aircraft climbed out of FLMF Mfuwe Airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile west of the airport. The climb started from an altitude of 2,845 feet above sea level and reached a maximum altitude of 28,046 feet above sea level, an increase of 25,202 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 122 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then began 10 miles south west of FLPT Fingoe Airport Petauke, and lasted for 14 minutes, covering a distance of 112 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 9 miles north of Bindura, Zimbabwe, and lasted for 13 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 26,816 feet above sea level to 5,963 feet above sea level, a decrease of 20,853 feet. The descent covered a distance of 54 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 05 at FVRG Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport was made from the south west, heading 45.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,163 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 05 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 433 meters, which was good. The touchdown speed was 128 knots, and the touchdown rate was fair at -231 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.6 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions during the landing were characterized by a temperature of 18°C, a wind speed of 3 knots at 170°, with a crosswind of 2 knots and a tailwind of 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,395 meters, which accounted for 30% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 296 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 58 minutes. The aircraft used 3,092 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at FVRG Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, achieving a score of 97.5%. The final approach to runway 05 was conducted from the southwest, heading 45.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,163 feet above ground level.
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 136 knots, which was slightly below the target threshold speed. However, the touchdown distance of 433 meters was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 128 knots was also within acceptable limits, further emphasizing the pilot's skill in managing the aircraft's descent.
Despite the good touchdown speed, the touchdown rate of -231 feet per minute was only fair, suggesting that the aircraft may have experienced a slight bounce or oscillation upon touchdown. However, this did not appear to have any significant impact on the overall landing performance.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.6 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's approach path or a minor error in the pilot's alignment with the runway. Nevertheless, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft and smoothly transition from the landing phase to the rollout phase.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 18°C and a gentle wind of 3 knots from a direction of 170°. The crosswind and tailwind components were both minimal, at 2 knots each, which further contributed to the smooth and controlled nature of the landing. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft coming to rest within 30% of the runway length and demonstrating good control and precision throughout the approach and landing phases.
