Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,987 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,987 m of the 2,507 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,305 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was conducted by the M2K-C Black Demonstrator, a high-performance aircraft. The taxiing process from the parking area to the runway took approximately 6 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 28 at LFQI Cambrai-Épinoy (BA 103) Air Base, a military air base located in France.
The takeoff roll was initiated on runway 28, and the aircraft lifted off the ground at a speed of 210 knots. The takeoff distance covered 34% of the runway, which was 845 meters long. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 23°C and a wind speed of 13 knots from a direction of 9°. The crosswind component was 13 knots, while the tailwind component was 1 knot.
After takeoff, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started overhead the town of Sauchy-Lestree in the Hauts-de-France region of France. The climb involved an increase in altitude from 1,282 feet above sea level to 1,640 feet above sea level, a rise of 357 feet in just 3 minutes. The aircraft covered a distance of 5 nautical miles during this phase of the flight.
The final approach to runway 28 at LFQI Cambrai-Épinoy (BA 103) Air Base was conducted from the east, with the aircraft heading in a direction of 282.0°. The approach was initiated at an altitude of 1,365 feet above ground level, and the aircraft was 3 nautical miles away from the runway threshold.
The landing was conducted on runway 28, which was 2,507 meters long. The threshold height at 72 feet above ground level was well above the target, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down safely. The threshold speed was 172 knots, and the touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway. The touchdown speed was 122 knots, and the touchdown rate was fair at -269 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 19°C and a wind speed of 9 knots from a direction of 10°. The crosswind component was 9 knots, while the tailwind component was 1 knot. The total landing distance was 1,906 meters, which was 76% of the runway length. However, the runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 22.6 meters from the centerline.
The total flight distance was 13 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 7 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 261 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The M2K-C Black Demonstrator aircraft successfully landed at LFQI Cambrai-Épinoy (BA 103) Air Base, achieving a score of 76.2%. The final approach to runway 28 was initiated from the east, with a heading of 282.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,365 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway, which has a length of 2,507 meters. However, the touchdown point was quite far down the runway, utilizing more than 50% of the available length. The touchdown speed was recorded at 122 knots, which is slightly higher than the target threshold speed of 172 knots. The touchdown rate of -269 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 19°C and a wind speed of 9 knots from a direction of 10°. This resulted in a crosswind of 9 knots and a tailwind of 1 knot. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
However, the runway rollout alignment was not as precise, with the aircraft deviating from the centerline by 22.6 meters. This suggests that the pilot may have experienced some difficulty in maintaining a straight course during the rollout phase of the landing. Despite this, the total landing distance of 1,906 meters was 76% of the available runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to come to a stop within a reasonable distance.
Overall, while the landing was not perfect, the M2K-C Black Demonstrator aircraft demonstrated a good level of proficiency in terms of its ability to navigate the runway and come to a stop within a reasonable distance. However, there is still room for improvement, particularly in terms of maintaining a straight course during the rollout phase of the landing.
