Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,279 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 501 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from KTTD Portland Troutdale Airport, the aircraft initiated its takeoff roll on runway 07, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 88 kt. The takeoff distance of 769 meters, which covered 50% of the runway, was achieved within a short period. Local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 20 °C and a gentle wind of 2 kt from 250°, resulting in a negligible crosswind component.
As the aircraft climbed out of KTTD, it began its enroute climb approximately 1 mile southeast of Washougal, Washington. The climb phase was characterized by a significant increase in altitude, from 551 ft asl to 24,012 ft asl, over a distance of 48 nm, within 15 minutes. Following this, the aircraft transitioned into a level cruise phase, which lasted for 245 minutes and covered a substantial distance of 1,149 nm. The cruise phase was initiated 9 miles south of WN55 Randle-Kiona Airpark Randle, Washington. Subsequently, the aircraft commenced its enroute descent, starting 34 miles west of 0AA1 Yakataga, Alaska, and descended from 24,006 ft asl to 1,033 ft asl over a distance of 62 nm within 14 minutes.
Upon approaching PACV Merle K (Mudhole) Smith Airport, the aircraft initiated its final approach to runway 27 from the southeast, aligning itself with a heading of 293.0° at 3 nm and 988 ft agl. The landing was executed with a threshold speed slightly above the target at 90 kt, and the touchdown point was 68 m beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 74 kt was within acceptable limits, and the touchdown rate of -143 fpm was smooth. Following a successful landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, covering a distance of less than 1 nm in 1 minute. The total flight distance of 1,267 nm was achieved within a flight time of 281 minutes, utilizing 915 kg of fuel.
The aircraft touched down on runway 27 at PACV Merle K (Mudhole) Smith Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in the landing phase. The approach quality was excellent, with a good threshold height and a slight deviation in threshold speed, registering 90 kt, which was marginally above the target. The aircraft maintained a steady descent, touching down at a speed of 74 kt, which was within the acceptable range.
The touchdown characteristics were smooth, with a touchdown rate of -143 fpm, indicating a controlled and stable descent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, with the aircraft centered on the runway. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 9 °C and a wind of 8 kt at 127 °, presented a moderate crosswind component of 2 kt and a tailwind component of 8 kt. Despite these conditions, the pilot maintained excellent control, resulting in a touchdown point 68 m beyond the touchdown zone.
The rollout phase was equally impressive, with the aircraft maintaining very good alignment on the runway. The total landing distance of 906 m, accounting for 40% of the runway length, was well within the acceptable range. Overall, the landing was scored 98.1%, reflecting the high level of proficiency demonstrated by the pilot in executing a safe and controlled landing.
