Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,254 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,254 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 364 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 35 at CYKL Schefferville Airport, with a takeoff distance of 603 meters, which was 40% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 97 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of -9°C, wind speed of 11 knots at 340°, with a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 11 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of CYKL Schefferville Airport, it began its enroute climb 2 miles northwest of the airport, rising from an altitude of 2,659 feet above sea level to 22,652 feet above sea level, an increase of 19,993 feet in 15 minutes, covering a distance of 37 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then started 39 miles west of CYKL Schefferville Airport and lasted for 81 minutes, covering a distance of 316 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 25 miles southwest of CYMU Umiujaq Airport, with the aircraft descending from 22,550 feet above sea level to 1,628 feet above sea level, a decrease of 20,922 feet in 25 minutes, covering a distance of 86 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then started again 10 miles southwest of CYSK Sanikiluaq Airport and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 09 at CYSK Sanikiluaq Airport was made from the southwest, with the aircraft heading 70.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,280 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 09 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 363 meters, which was good, and a touchdown speed of 79 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was excellent at -97 feet per minute, but the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 8.9 meters from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -7°C, wind speed of 17 knots at 170°, with a crosswind of 17 knots and a tailwind of 3 knots. The total landing distance was 844 meters, which was 67% of the runway length, and the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.0 meters from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 453 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 135 minutes, with a fuel consumption of 226 kilograms.
The aircraft, identified as an M500, successfully landed at CYSK Sanikiluaq Airport, with a final approach from the southwest at a heading of 70.0° and an altitude of 1,280 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft was at a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway when it began its final approach. The landing was executed on runway 09, which has a length of 1,254 meters.
The pilot's performance during the final approach was satisfactory, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 90 knots. The touchdown distance was also within acceptable limits at 363 meters. However, the touchdown speed of 79 knots was slightly faster than ideal, indicating that the pilot may have been able to flare the aircraft more effectively to achieve a smoother touchdown.
The aircraft's descent rate during touchdown was excellent, with a rate of -97 feet per minute. This suggests that the pilot was able to control the aircraft's descent effectively, resulting in a smooth and controlled touchdown. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 8.9 meters, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's alignment during the final approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of -7°C and a wind speed of 17 knots from a direction of 170°. This resulted in a crosswind component of 17 knots and a tailwind component of 3 knots. The total landing distance was 844 meters, which is 67% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned from the centerline by 9.0 meters, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's alignment during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was executed safely and effectively, with the pilot demonstrating good control and management of the aircraft during the final approach and touchdown phases. However, there were some minor deviations in the pilot's alignment and speed control, which may be addressed through further training and practice.
