Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,738 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 576 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Tokyo Haneda International Airport, the Boeing 777F began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took approximately 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. With a takeoff distance of 1,774 meters, which accounted for 59% of the runway, the aircraft lifted off from runway 16R at a liftoff speed of 189 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 13 knots at 209 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 11 knots and a headwind of 6 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its initial cruising altitude, it ascended from 976 feet above sea level to 32,862 feet, an increase of 31,886 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 184 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise phase that followed lasted for 247 minutes, during which the aircraft covered 2,354 nautical miles. The flight then underwent a series of climbs and level cruises, with notable increases in altitude at 80 miles north of AK23 Driftwood Bay Air Force Station and 23 miles northeast of KJAC Jackson Hole Airport. The final descent phase began 2 miles southwest of 0TX0 Nassau Bay Airport, during which the aircraft descended from 36,879 feet to 1,677 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,202 feet in 25 minutes.
Upon arrival at Austin Bergstrom International Airport, the Boeing 777F executed a final approach to runway 36L from the south, aligning itself with a heading of 354.0 degrees at 3 nautical miles and 1,163 feet above ground level. The aircraft landed on the runway, with a touchdown point 167 meters beyond the touchdown zone, at a speed of 135 knots. The total landing distance was 1,271 meters, accounting for 34% of the runway. Following a smooth taxiing process, the aircraft arrived at the parking area, having covered a total distance of 5,884 nautical miles in 651 minutes, with a fuel consumption of 92,446 kilograms.
The Boeing 777F touched down on runway 36L at KAUS Austin Bergstrom International Airport with a satisfactory approach quality, characterized by a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 146 kt. The aircraft maintained a steady descent, ultimately touching down at a speed of 135 kt, which was within the acceptable range. The touchdown rate of -96 fpm was particularly impressive, demonstrating excellent control and precision.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's wheels made contact with the runway 167 m beyond the designated touchdown zone, which was slightly beyond the ideal point. However, the runway touchdown position was only 3.5 m off-centreline, indicating a relatively good alignment. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 17 °C and a gentle wind of 2 kt at 140 °, contributed to a smooth and stable landing. The crosswind and tailwind components were minimal, at 1 kt each, further facilitating a stable approach.
The total landing distance of 1,271 m, which accounted for 34% of the runway length, was within the acceptable range. The runway rollout alignment was very good, with the aircraft maintaining a consistent path along the centreline. Overall, the landing performance of the Boeing 777F was highly satisfactory, earning a score of 98.5%. The crew's skill and attention to detail were evident in the smooth and controlled execution of the landing.
