Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 12,040 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 972 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 33 at Bradley International Airport (KBDL) in Hartford, Connecticut. The takeoff distance was 4,488 feet, which accounted for 66% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 156 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 46°F and winds of 6 knots at 265°. The crosswind was 4 knots, and the headwind was also 4 knots. As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile northwest of KBDL. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,183 feet above sea level to 39,774 feet, an increase of 38,591 feet, in 25 minutes and covering 133 nautical miles.
After completing the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile east of Barneveld, New York. This phase lasted for 182 minutes and covered a distance of 1,237 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 5 miles north of Fleming, Colorado. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 39,417 feet to 6,638 feet, a decrease of 32,779 feet, in 23 minutes and covering 97 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 16L at Denver International Airport (KDEN) was made from the north, heading 180.0°, at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,269 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 16L, which had a length of 12,040 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 134 knots. However, the touchdown point was 908 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 134 knots. The touchdown rate was hard at -500 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 16 feet from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 63°F and winds of 5 knots at 329°. The crosswind was 3 knots, and the tailwind was 4 knots. The total landing distance was 5,079 feet, which accounted for 42% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 41 feet from the centerline. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking, which took 9 minutes and covered 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 1,476 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 247 minutes. The aircraft used 19,012 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at KDEN Denver International Airport on runway 16L, achieving a score of 90.4%. The final approach was initiated from the north, heading 180.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,269 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 134 knots.
However, there were a few areas for improvement during the landing. The touchdown point was 908 feet beyond the touchdown zone, indicating that the aircraft touched down slightly further down the runway than intended. Additionally, the touchdown speed of 134 knots was a bit fast, and the touchdown rate was hard at -500 feet per minute (fpm). This suggests that the aircraft may have experienced a slightly rougher-than-ideal touchdown.
Furthermore, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 16 feet from the centreline, which may have contributed to the slightly rough touchdown. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 63°F and winds of 5 knots at 329°. The crosswind was minimal at 3 knots, and the tailwind was 4 knots, which may have had a slight impact on the aircraft's performance during the landing.
The total landing distance was 5,079 feet, which is 42% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was able to slow down and stop quickly after touchdown. However, the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 41 feet from the centreline, which may have required the pilots to make some adjustments to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there were a few areas for improvement that the pilots and the aircraft's systems could focus on to achieve an even smoother and more precise landing in the future.
