Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,874 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,874 m of the 2,442 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,264 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 10L at Chicago O'Hare International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,443 meters, which accounted for 37% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 164 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 2 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 11 knots at 150 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 10 knots and a headwind of 6 knots. The aircraft climbed to a height of 34,395 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,603 feet from the initial altitude of 1,792 feet, in 22 minutes and covering a distance of 146 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 1 mile east of Heritage Lake in Indiana, and lasted for 134 minutes, covering a distance of 1,072 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from a latitude of 26.1352389 and longitude of -72.7232844, to a height of 37,888 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,968 feet, in just 2 minutes and covering a distance of 18 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise continued, starting from a latitude of 25.8612188 and longitude of -72.5457684, and lasted for 67 minutes, covering a distance of 542 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 13 miles north of ZC05 San Juan Static Carrier - CVN76 in Puerto Rico, and descended from a height of 38,331 feet above sea level to 1,389 feet above sea level, a decrease of 36,942 feet, in 27 minutes and covering a distance of 29 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 10 at Luis Munoz Marin International Airport was made from the west, heading 89.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,381 feet above ground level. The aircraft landed on the runway, with the first landing having a threshold height that was excessively over target, but a threshold speed that was good. The second landing had a threshold height that was well above target, and a threshold speed that was slightly below target.
The touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway, and the touchdown speed was good at 110 knots. However, the touchdown rate was hard at -480 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 22.5 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 27 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 14 knots at 100 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 13 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,787 meters, which accounted for 73% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also misaligned by 22.5 meters from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,824 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 278 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 11,801 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at TJSJ Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, but the landing was not without its challenges. The final approach to runway 10 from the west was initiated at a height of 1,381 feet above ground level (agl) and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft was heading 89.0 degrees at the time of the approach.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down at a speed of 110 knots, which was considered good. However, the touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway. This indicates that the aircraft may have been slightly high on final approach, resulting in a longer than necessary landing distance. The touchdown rate was also hard, at -480 feet per minute (fpm), which may have contributed to the long landing distance.
The threshold height at 129 feet agl was excessively over target, and the threshold speed was slightly below target at 133 knots. This suggests that the aircraft may have been experiencing some difficulties with its approach configuration. The runway touchdown position was also significantly misaligned by 22.5 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a combination of factors including wind and pilot error.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 27 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 14 knots at 100 degrees. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 13 knots. These conditions would not have significantly impacted the landing, but may have contributed to the misaligned touchdown position.
The total landing distance was 1,787 meters, which was 73% of the available runway length. This is a relatively long landing distance, and may indicate that the aircraft was not properly configured for the approach. The runway rollout alignment was also misaligned by 22.5 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the same factors that contributed to the misaligned touchdown position.
Overall, while the Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at TJSJ Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, the landing was not without its challenges. The aircraft experienced a long landing distance, a hard touchdown rate, and a misaligned touchdown position, which may have been due to a combination of factors including wind, pilot error, and approach configuration issues.
