Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,094 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 139 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 10 at KRIW Central Wyoming Regional Airport. The CRJ900 aircraft accelerated down the runway, covering a distance of 601 meters, which was 24% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was achieved at 162 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 350 degrees. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the tailwind component was 2 knots.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile southeast of KRIW Central Wyoming Regional Airport. The climb was from an initial altitude of 6,256 feet above sea level to a maximum altitude of 13,319 feet above sea level, an increase of 7,062 feet in just 5 minutes. During this climb, the aircraft covered a distance of 25 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 19 miles southeast of Shoshoni, Wyoming. This phase lasted for 5 minutes and covered a distance of 32 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 19 miles west of 45WY American Falconry Airport Casper. The descent was from an altitude of 13,307 feet above sea level to 7,703 feet above sea level, a decrease of 5,604 feet in 5 minutes, covering a distance of 22 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 8 miles south of 45WY American Falconry Airport Casper. This phase lasted for 3 minutes and covered a distance of 8 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 03 at KCPR Casper-Natrona County International Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 44.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,261 feet above ground level.
The landing was made on runway 03, which had a length of 3,094 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed at 146 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 143 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 143 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -294 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 4.9 meters.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 350 degrees. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots. The total landing distance was 1,156 meters, which was 37% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area from the runway, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile in 2 minutes. The total flight distance was 91 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 22 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 652 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The CRJ900 aircraft successfully landed at KCPR Casper-Natrona County International Airport, achieving a score of 97.7%. The final approach was conducted from the southwest, heading 44.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,261 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 03, which has a length of 3,094 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 146 knots. This may indicate a slight deviation from the optimal approach speed, but it did not appear to have a significant impact on the overall landing performance. The touchdown distance was good at 143 meters, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain control and stability during the landing.
However, the touchdown speed of 143 knots was a little fast, which may have contributed to a fair touchdown rate of -294 feet per minute (fpm). A faster touchdown speed can result in a higher rate of descent, which may be a concern for the aircraft's safety and comfort.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.9 meters from the centerline, which may indicate a slight deviation from the optimal landing path. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain control and stability during the rollout phase.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were reported as follows: temperature 10°C, wind 4 knots at 350°, crosswind 3 knots, and headwind 3 knots. These conditions were relatively calm, which may have contributed to the successful landing. Overall, the CRJ900 aircraft demonstrated good landing performance, with some minor deviations from the optimal approach and touchdown speeds.
