Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,635 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 360 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-MAX8, then departed from runway 31 at LaGuardia Airport (KLGA) in New York. The takeoff distance was 1,118 meters, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 156 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 12 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 22 knots coming from a direction of 260 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 15 knots and a headwind of 16 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile south east of Port Morris, New York, and ascended from an altitude of 994 feet above sea level to 38,966 feet above sea level, an increase of 37,972 feet, in 19 minutes and covering a distance of 141 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started overhead Middleburg, Pennsylvania, and lasted for 27 minutes, covering a distance of 322 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 4 miles north of Napoleon, Ohio, and descended from an altitude of 39,347 feet above sea level to 6,060 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,287 feet, in 16 minutes and covering a distance of 134 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started again 1 mile east of Wheeler, Indiana, and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 13 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 31C at Chicago Midway International Airport (KMDW) was made from the south east, heading 314.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,261 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on runway 31C, which had a length of 1,635 meters. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 8 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 9 knots coming from a direction of 280 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 8 knots.
The landing was successful, with a threshold speed of 142 knots, a touchdown distance of 361 meters, and a touchdown speed of 137 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -266 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The total landing distance was 997 meters, which accounted for 61% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect.
The final taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 633 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 81 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 4,247 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-MAX8 aircraft successfully landed on runway 31C at KMDW Chicago Midway International Airport, showcasing a high level of precision and control. The final approach was initiated from the southeast, heading 314.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,261 feet above ground level (agl). This approach was executed with a high degree of accuracy, as evident from the subsequent landing performance.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft demonstrated a good threshold height, indicating that the pilots maintained a stable and controlled descent. The threshold speed of 142 knots was also within the acceptable range, signifying that the pilots had properly managed the aircraft's speed during the final stages of the approach. The touchdown distance of 361 meters was also satisfactory, indicating that the pilots had successfully controlled the aircraft's descent and speed.
However, the touchdown rate of -266 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the pilots could have maintained a more stable and controlled descent. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilots had successfully aligned the aircraft with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 8°C and a wind speed of 9 knots from 280°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 8 knots. Despite these challenging weather conditions, the pilots successfully managed the aircraft's approach and landing.
The total landing distance of 997 meters was 61% of the runway length, indicating that the pilots had successfully controlled the aircraft's speed and descent during the landing. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, demonstrating that the pilots had successfully maintained control of the aircraft during the post-landing phase.
Overall, the Boeing 737-MAX8 aircraft's landing on runway 31C at KMDW Chicago Midway International Airport was a success, with the pilots demonstrating a high level of skill and precision in managing the aircraft's approach and landing.
