Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 6,132 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 6,132 ft of the 10,939 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,631 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-MAX8, then departed from runway 15L at KIAH George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport. The takeoff distance was 6,288 feet, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 167 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 98°F temperature and winds of 6 knots at 110°. The crosswind was 4 knots, while the headwind was 5 knots. The enroute climb started 2 miles northeast of Aldine, Texas, and involved a significant increase in altitude from 1,113 feet above sea level to 35,490 feet above sea level, a rise of 34,377 feet in just 18 minutes and covering 114 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 3 miles north of Webberville, Texas, and lasted for 7 minutes, covering a distance of 52 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent from 36,456 feet above sea level to 35,201 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,255 feet in just 2 minutes and covering 12 nautical miles.
The flight continued with another climb phase, which started 3 miles south of XS00 Flying D Airport Llano, Texas, and involved a rise from 35,173 feet above sea level to 36,086 feet above sea level, an increase of 913 feet in just 2 minutes and covering 11 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 8 miles northwest of XS00 Flying D Airport Llano, Texas, and lasted for 102 minutes, covering a distance of 745 nautical miles.
As the flight progressed, the aircraft began its descent from 36,352 feet above sea level to 3,375 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,976 feet in 24 minutes and covering 126 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 26R at KLAS Harry Reid International Airport was made from the east, heading 269.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,237 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 26R was successful, with the touchdown point being 288 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 138 knots, which was good, and the touchdown rate was firm at -332 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 13 feet from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 100°F temperature and winds of 9 knots at 229°, with a crosswind of 6 knots and a headwind of 7 knots.
The total landing distance was 5,889 feet, which accounted for 54% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took just 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,068 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 164 minutes. The aircraft used 12,935 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-MAX8 aircraft successfully landed at KLAS Harry Reid International Airport, achieving a score of 97.7%. The final approach to runway 26R was conducted from the east, with a heading of 269.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,237 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway, with a threshold speed of 146 knots being maintained. The touchdown point was located 288 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is slightly outside the recommended area. However, the touchdown speed of 138 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating a controlled descent. The touchdown rate of -332 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting a stable and controlled landing.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 13 feet from the centerline, which may require some adjustments during the rollout phase. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were hot, with a temperature of 100°F, and a moderate wind blowing at 9 knots from 229°. The crosswind component was 6 knots, while the headwind component was 7 knots, which may have contributed to the slight misalignment during touchdown.
The total landing distance of 5,889 feet was 54% of the available runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was well-controlled during the post-landing phase. Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good control and stability throughout the landing process.
