Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,907 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,907 m of the 2,996 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 917 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Brussels Airport, the L1011-500 Standard Cabin aircraft began its journey on runway 25R, taking off with a distance of 1,589 meters, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 146 knots, with a local temperature of 18°C and a gentle headwind of 2 knots. As it departed the Belgian airspace, the aircraft climbed to a height of 31,966 feet above sea level, an increase of 30,758 feet in just 16 minutes, covering a distance of 81 nautical miles.
The enroute climb continued as the aircraft passed over various points in France and Spain, with brief periods of level cruise. Notably, the aircraft spent 30 minutes cruising at 32,170 feet above sea level, covering a distance of 454 nautical miles. As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent, gradually losing altitude over the Spanish terrain. The final approach to runway 32R at Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport was made from the south east, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 138 knots and a rate of -171 feet per minute. The touchdown point was 486 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline.
The aircraft landed on the 3,002-meter runway, with a total landing distance of 1,812 meters, accounting for 60% of the runway. Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking 89 minutes to cover a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 761 nautical miles, and the aircraft consumed 15,015 kilograms of fuel during the journey.
The aircraft touched down on runway 32R at LEMD Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport, with a threshold height of 78 ft agl, significantly above the target. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a heading of 323.0° at 4 nm and 1,448 ft agl. The aircraft maintained a steady descent, eventually touching down at a speed of 138 kt, which was slightly below the threshold speed of 147 kt.
The touchdown characteristics were good, with a touchdown rate of -171 fpm. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.0 m from the centreline, indicating a slight deviation from the intended path. The aircraft continued to roll out, covering a total distance of 1,812 m, which accounted for 60% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned, by 9.4 m from the centreline.
The local weather conditions were calm, with a temperature of 15 °C and a wind speed of 2 kt at 270°. The crosswind component was minimal, at 2 kt, while the headwind component was 1 kt. Overall, the landing performance was satisfactory, with a score of 82.6%. While there were some minor deviations from the intended path, the aircraft demonstrated good control and stability throughout the landing sequence.
