Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,295 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,295 m of the 4,095 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 945 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, then departed from runway 01R at Harry Reid International Airport (KLAS) in Las Vegas, Nevada. The takeoff distance was 1,070 meters, which accounted for 42% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 167 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of 10°C temperature and a wind speed of 0 knots at 84 degrees. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Paradise, Nevada, and ascending from 3,117 feet above sea level to 37,445 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,328 feet in 15 minutes and covering a distance of 97 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 17 miles northeast of Hualapai Airport (3AZ5) in Peach Springs, Arizona, and lasted for 83 minutes, covering a distance of 713 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 8 miles west of Holliday, Texas, and descending from 37,446 feet above sea level to 12,026 feet above sea level, a decrease of 25,420 feet in 11 minutes and covering a distance of 86 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting overhead Sitton Field (3TX3) in Justin, Texas, and lasting for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 10 nautical miles. The enroute descent started 1 mile southeast of Trophy Club, Texas, and the aircraft descended from 11,982 feet above sea level to 1,871 feet above sea level, a decrease of 10,111 feet in 11 minutes and covering a distance of 12 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 36L at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (KDFW) was made from the south, heading 0.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,296 feet above ground level. The aircraft landed on runway 36L, which had a length of 4,095 meters. The threshold height was slightly above the target, but the threshold speed was good at 147 knots.
The touchdown point was 535 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 147 knots. However, the touchdown rate was good at -158 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 16°C temperature and a wind speed of 2 knots at 360 degrees.
The total landing distance was 2,220 meters, which accounted for 54% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking from the runway, which took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 927 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 134 minutes. The aircraft used 15,339 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed on runway 36L at KDFW Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, achieving a score of 89.0%. The final approach to the runway was initiated from the south, with the aircraft heading 0.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,296 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 535 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is slightly beyond the ideal point. The touchdown speed of 147 knots was a bit faster than desired, indicating that the pilots may have needed to apply more braking force to slow down the aircraft. However, the touchdown rate of -158 feet per minute (fpm) was within the acceptable range, suggesting that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 16°C and a gentle headwind of 2 knots from a direction of 360°. The crosswind component was negligible, at 0 knots. These conditions likely contributed to the smooth and controlled nature of the landing.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilots successfully aligned the aircraft with the runway centerline during the final approach. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, suggesting that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the braking phase and brought it to a stop in a stable and controlled manner.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor deviations from the ideal performance. The pilots demonstrated good control and handling of the aircraft, and the aircraft's systems performed as expected. However, there is room for improvement in terms of touchdown speed and touchdown point.
