Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 8,009 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,067 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 14 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 18L at EHAM Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The takeoff distance was 3,499 feet, which accounted for 38% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 156 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 31 degrees Fahrenheit, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 169 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 0 knots and a headwind of 2 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northeast of Aalsmeerderbrug, a location in the province of Noord-Holland, the Netherlands. The climb took 22 minutes and covered a distance of 117 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,053 feet above sea level to 37,892 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 46 miles north of EHAL Ameland Airport Ballum Ballum, a location in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. This phase lasted for 38 minutes and covered a distance of 256 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 24 miles west of Vigrestad, a location in the province of Rogaland, Norway. The descent took 23 minutes and covered a distance of 125 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 38,190 feet above sea level to 4,213 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 10 miles southwest of Manger, a location in the province of Vestland, Norway. This phase lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another descent, starting 4 miles west of Manger. The descent took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 3,817 feet above sea level to 2,868 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 5 miles south of Manger. This phase lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another descent, starting 3 miles north of Askoy, a location in the province of Vestland, Norway. The descent took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 5 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 2,821 feet above sea level to 1,452 feet.
The final approach to runway 17 at ENBR Bergen Airport, Flesland was made from the north, with a heading of 170.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,286 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 17, which had a length of 8,009 feet. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 45 degrees Fahrenheit, with a wind speed of 18 knots at 230 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 16 knots and a headwind of 9 knots.
The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 1,068 feet, which was 40% of the runway. The touchdown speed was 135 knots, which was a little fast, and the touchdown rate was fair at -298 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 14 feet from the centerline. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 529 nautical miles, which was covered in 109 minutes, and the aircraft used 9,020 pounds
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at ENBR Bergen Airport, Flesland, with a score of 98.6%. The final approach to runway 17 was initiated from the north, heading 170.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,286 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was characterized by a good threshold height, indicating that the pilots maintained a suitable altitude prior to touchdown.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway at a speed of 135 knots, which was slightly faster than the recommended threshold speed of 138 knots. However, the touchdown distance of 1,068 feet was within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate of -298 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, suggesting that the pilots could have managed the descent more smoothly.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 14 feet from the centreline, which may have been due to factors such as crosswind or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing included a temperature of 45°F, wind speed of 18 knots at 230°, resulting in a crosswind of 16 knots and a headwind of 9 knots.
The total landing distance of 3,185 feet was 40% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the post-landing phase and ensured a safe and stable rollout.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft touching down safely on the runway and the pilots demonstrating good control and management of the aircraft during the approach and landing phases. However, there were some minor issues, such as the slightly fast touchdown speed and the misaligned runway touchdown position, which could be addressed through further training and practice.
