Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,560 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,560 m of the 2,303 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 801 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a TBM 930, then departed from runway 30 at LIMS Piacenza San Damiano Air Base. The takeoff distance was 471 meters, which accounted for 19% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 84 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 14°C, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 270°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 2 knots. The aircraft climbed from 1,233 feet above sea level to 27,015 feet above sea level, an increase of 25,783 feet, in 17 minutes and covering 34 nautical miles. This enroute climb started overhead LIMS Piacenza San Damiano Air Base.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which began overhead Spineda in Lombardia, Italy. This phase lasted for 92 minutes and covered 389 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 3 miles southeast of Jestrabi in the Zlinsky kraj region of the Czech Republic. The descent from 26,921 feet above sea level to 2,997 feet above sea level, a decrease of 23,924 feet, took 16 minutes and covered 69 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started overhead Nowa Wies in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship of Poland. This phase lasted for 5 minutes and covered 15 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting overhead Mirow in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. The descent from 2,990 feet above sea level to 2,063 feet above sea level, a decrease of 927 feet, took 2 minutes and covered 5 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 07 at EPKK Kraków John Paul II International Airport was made from the west, with a heading of 78.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,267 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 07 was characterized by a touchdown point that was 368 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 78 knots, which was too fast, while the touchdown rate was excellent at -72 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.6 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 16°C, with a wind speed of 1 knot at 0°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 0 knots. The total landing distance was 1,462 meters, which accounted for 63% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 518 nautical miles, which was covered in 139 minutes. The aircraft used 373 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The TBM 930 aircraft successfully landed at EPKK Kraków John Paul II International Airport, but with some areas for improvement. The final approach was initiated from the west, heading 78.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,267 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 07, which has a length of 2,303 meters.
However, there were some issues with the landing. The threshold height at 64 feet agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been slightly high on its approach. Additionally, the threshold speed was excessively high at 99 knots, which could have contributed to the high touchdown speed. The touchdown point was 368 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed of 78 knots was also too fast.
On the positive side, the touchdown rate was excellent at -72 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.6 meters from the centerline, but the runway rollout alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 1 knot at 0°. There was no crosswind or headwind, which made the landing conditions ideal.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there are areas for improvement, particularly in terms of speed and alignment. With some adjustments to the approach and landing technique, the pilot can aim to achieve a more precise and controlled landing.
