Improve the takeoff
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,488 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 550 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Groningen Airport Eelde, the DHC-2 Beaver lifted off from runway 23 after a 397-meter takeoff roll, representing 16% of the available runway length. The aircraft achieved liftoff speed of 65 knots, meeting the required threshold for safe flight. Under local weather conditions of 16°C temperature and a negligible headwind of 1 knot from 270°, the aircraft transitioned smoothly into the enroute phase.
Climbing to a cruise altitude, the aircraft flew overhead Yde, a location in the province of Drenthe, Netherlands, before descending into the final approach phase. The aircraft's heading was adjusted to 51.0°, aligning with the approach path to runway 05 at Groningen Airport Eelde. The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, with a touchdown speed of 64 knots, slightly below the target value. The touchdown point was 110 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, but the aircraft's touchdown speed of 46 knots and smooth touchdown rate of -117 feet per minute ensured a safe and controlled landing.
The total landing distance of 743 meters, representing 30% of the available runway length, was well within the acceptable limits. The runway touchdown alignment was excellent, and the aircraft's rollout alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilot's skill and control. The total flight distance of 4 nautical miles was completed in 4 minutes, with a fuel consumption of 8 kilograms. The aircraft's performance was consistent with the expected values, given the local weather conditions and the pilot's expertise.
The final approach to runway 05 at EHGG Groningen Airport Eelde was executed from the south west, with a heading of 51.0° at 0 nm and 102 ft above ground level. The approach quality was excellent, with a good threshold height, allowing the aircraft to maintain a stable and controlled descent. The threshold speed was slightly below the target, coming in at 64 kt, but this did not impact the overall performance of the landing.
As the aircraft touched down on the runway, it did so at a speed of 46 kt, which was well within the acceptable range. The touchdown rate was smooth, at -117 fpm, indicating a controlled and gentle touchdown. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, with the aircraft maintaining its centreline alignment throughout the touchdown phase. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 15 °C and a wind of 1 kt at 270°, contributed to a stable and predictable approach.
The total landing distance was 743 m, which was 30% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, with the aircraft maintaining its centreline alignment throughout the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was scored 98.0%, reflecting the high level of proficiency and control demonstrated by the pilot. The combination of a good approach, smooth touchdown, and precise rollout alignment made for a highly successful landing.
