MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Arrival
Reduce power earlier on final to bring threshold speed back to 145 kt.
What happened: You crossed the threshold at 150 kt against a target of 145 kt, and touchdown followed at 1,095 ft, well short of the 1,500 ft aim point. Carrying extra speed over the threshold usually floats the flare and carries the touchdown point short.
Watch for: Airspeed indicator, target 145 kt at the threshold.
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

From brake release to the end of the climb, against time, then the takeoff point by point.
Rotated at 152 kt, and lifted off at 172 kt 3.1 s later, the nose coming up at 2.0° a second. Climb 3 averaged 205 kt, 12 kt over its 193 kt target.
Two traces from brake release: the airspeed on top, and below it the pitch, which is how far the nose is above the horizon. The figures at liftoff are the pitch then and how fast the nose came up, in degrees a second. The shaded stretch is Climb 3, the part of the climb scored on holding the climb speed.
The takeoff, point by point
Side view from the start of the roll to the end of Climb 3 at 874 ft.
Reached 35 ft with 6,522 ft of runway left; gear up at 51 ft, inside the 400 ft that gets full marks; then climbing at 3,100 fpm on average to 874 ft.
The takeoff from the side: the height above the runway against the distance along it. The numbers along the runway are the speeds reached at each point. Lifting off in the amber last quarter of the runway costs marks for the roll length. The gear-up ring is coloured by its mark. The shaded stretch is Climb 3, scored on its average speed against the target.
Plan view the roll down the 11,080 ft runway.
Rolled from 236 ft in, drifted left of the centreline, 9 ft at the widest, and lifted off 10 ft left. Airborne 32 % of the way down the runway, before the 75 % line.
The roll from above, with your left at the top. The line is where the wheels went, and "widest" is the furthest you drifted off the centreline. Lifting off before the amber 75 % line gets full marks for the roll length.
The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
The final from 4 nm.
Profile height against the 3° glideslope, with its 1° band in green.
On the glideslope from 4 nm to 0.9 nm, then low to 0.2 nm (up to 150 ft under).
Your height above the runway against the distance still to go. The glideslope is the steady descent path to the aiming point, 1,000 ft past the threshold: 3° here, which is about 320 ft for every nautical mile out, crossing the threshold at about 50 ft. The row under the distances is the height it puts you at. Inside the green band your path is drawn green; outside it, amber.
Plan distance off the extended centreline, your left at the top, with the 1° band. Sideways distances are drawn 28× larger than distances along the final.
Inside the 1° band all the way from 4 nm, never more than 40 ft off the centreline.
Looking down from above, flying left to right towards the runway: up the page is left of the centreline, down is right. Sideways distances are stretched so that small drifts show, so a line that looks wild here may be only a few tens of feet. The labels are how far off you were at each distance, amber when outside the band.
The rest of the report
The MD-11 taxied from the parking area to runway 25L at KLAX for eight minutes, covering 1 nm, and then departed on runway 25L. Takeoff used 3,545 ft, which was 32 % of the runway. Rotation occurred at 152 kt. The local weather at departure was temperature 78 °F, wind 7 kt from 239°, with a 3 kt cross-wind and a 6 kt head-wind.
Initial climb to 1,000 ft agl took 14 seconds, averaging 3,214 fpm and reaching 208 kt at the top of the climb. The aircraft then climbed from 1,054 ft asl to 22,458 ft asl in seven minutes, covering 41 nm, starting overhead El Segundo. Cruise level was 22,800 ft asl for two minutes, covering 12 nm, starting overhead Los Alamitos.
Descent began from 22,458 ft asl and proceeded to 3,975 ft asl in 16 minutes, covering 83 nm, starting 1 mile southeast of Rowland Heights, with brief level-offs at 15,000 ft asl and 6,200 ft asl. The final approach to runway 17 at KVCV started at 1,185 ft agl and descended to 100 ft agl in 82 seconds.
Stabilisation checks were performed at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway; all items were met: gear down, landing flap, sink rate, glideslope, centreline, speed, and wings level. Configuration on final was flap position 6 at 1,006 ft agl, with an airspeed of 163 kt.
The aircraft touched down on runway 17 at KVCV 1,095 ft short of the threshold; the threshold was never crossed in the air. Threshold speed was 150 kt. Touchdown speed was 145 kt, a little fast, with a firm rate of -330 fpm. The flare was described as very good, with little round-out and no bounce. Runway-touchdown alignment was perfect. Total landing distance was 5,075 ft, 39 % of the runway, and rollout alignment remained perfect.
After landing, the MD-11 taxied to the parking area in two minutes, covering less than 1 nm. The flight covered 144 nm in 36 minutes and used 9,731 lb of fuel. Local weather at landing was temperature 74 °F, wind 6 kt from 186°, with a 1 kt cross-wind and a 5 kt head-wind.
