Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,694 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,694 m of the 2,134 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 439 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 03 at KCPR Casper-Natrona County International Airport. The CRJ900 aircraft accelerated down the runway, covering a distance of 1,013 meters, which was 33% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was achieved at 174 knots, marking the start of the takeoff phase.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it encountered local weather conditions of 15°C temperature and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 350°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was also 3 knots. The enroute climb started approximately 1 mile northeast of the airport, with the aircraft ascending from an initial altitude of 6,310 feet above sea level to a maximum altitude of 15,352 feet above sea level. This climb phase covered a distance of 14 nautical miles and took 4 minutes to complete, resulting in an altitude gain of 9,042 feet.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 11 miles north of Homa Hills. This phase lasted for 11 minutes and covered a distance of 61 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 11 miles northwest of WY38 Orchard Ranch Airport. The descent phase took 5 minutes to complete, covering a distance of 24 nautical miles, and resulted in a decrease in altitude of 7,215 feet from 14,849 feet above sea level to 7,633 feet above sea level.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 2 miles northwest of Worland and lasted for 5 minutes, covering a distance of 10 nautical miles. The final descent phase began 7 miles north of West River, with the aircraft descending from 7,806 feet above sea level to 5,338 feet above sea level. This phase took 3 minutes to complete, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 16 at KWRL Worland Municipal Airport was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 176.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,153 feet above ground level. The landing was executed on runway 16, which had a length of 2,134 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 145 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 441 meters, and the touchdown speed was also good at 131 knots. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -220 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 7.5 meters. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 11°C temperature.
The total landing distance was 1,614 meters, which was 76% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 126 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 33 minutes. The aircraft used 977 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The CRJ900 aircraft successfully landed at KWRL Worland Municipal Airport, achieving a score of 96.9%. The final approach to runway 16 was initiated from the north, with the aircraft heading 176.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,153 feet above ground level.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 131 knots, which was within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 441 meters was also considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate of -220 feet per minute was only fair, suggesting that the aircraft could have maintained a more stable rate of descent.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 7.5 meters, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's approach path. Despite this, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively to bring the aircraft to a stop.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 11°C, which may have had some impact on the aircraft's performance. However, the overall landing was considered successful, with the aircraft coming to a stop within 76% of the runway length. The threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 145 knots, but this was not considered a significant issue.
Overall, the landing was considered good, with the aircraft demonstrating a high level of control and precision. The slight deviations in touchdown position and rate of descent were minor issues, and the aircraft's brakes performed well to bring the aircraft to a stop.
