Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 6,006 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,387 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with taxiing from the parking to the runway at KASL Harrison County Airport, which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 15, with a takeoff distance of 1,921 feet, which was 39% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 94 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it started at 1 mile south east of KASL Harrison County Airport and reached an altitude of 25,940 feet above sea level, an increase of 25,007 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 52 nautical miles. The local weather conditions during this time were a temperature of 60°F and a wind speed of 1 knot at 270°.
The enroute level cruise started 4 miles south east of Appleby, Texas, and lasted for 18 minutes, covering a distance of 71 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent from 25,935 feet above sea level to 18,399 feet above sea level, a decrease of 7,536 feet in 6 minutes, covering a distance of 19 nautical miles.
The flight continued with multiple enroute level cruises and descents, each with varying altitudes and distances covered. The aircraft levelled out at 3 miles east of Hull, Texas, for 2 minutes, covering 8 nautical miles, and then began its descent from 18,096 feet above sea level to 8,248 feet above sea level, a decrease of 9,847 feet in 9 minutes, covering a distance of 30 nautical miles.
The flight then levelled out at 3 miles north of Jacinto City, Texas, for 2 minutes, covering 7 nautical miles, and began its descent from 7,917 feet above sea level to 2,855 feet above sea level, a decrease of 5,062 feet in 4 minutes, covering a distance of 14 nautical miles.
The aircraft continued with multiple enroute level cruises and descents, each with varying altitudes and distances covered. The final enroute level cruise started 2 miles south of League City, Texas, and lasted for 9 minutes, covering a distance of 28 nautical miles.
The flight then began its final approach to runway 32 at KGLS Scholes International At Galveston Airport from the south east, heading 322.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,048 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 1,383 feet, which was good, and a touchdown speed of 80 knots, which was a little fast.
The local weather conditions during the landing were a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 1 knot at 270°. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 22 feet from the centreline, but the runway rollout alignment was very good. The total landing distance was 3,465 feet, which was 58% of the runway length.
The flight then ended with taxiing to the parking from the runway, which took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 249 nautical miles, and the flight used 412 pounds of fuel.
The aircraft, identified as an M500, successfully landed at KGLS Scholes International At Galveston Airport, with a final approach from the south east. The aircraft's heading was 322.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,048 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a smooth landing on runway 32, which has a length of 6,006 feet.
The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was maintained at 91 knots, indicating a well-executed approach. The touchdown distance was also within acceptable limits at 1,383 feet. However, the touchdown speed of 80 knots was slightly higher than desired, suggesting that the pilot may have been able to flare the aircraft more effectively to achieve a smoother touchdown.
The touchdown rate was smooth at -102 feet per minute (fpm), which is a good indication of the pilot's skill and control during the landing. Unfortunately, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 22 feet from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach or a minor error in navigation.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from 270°. The crosswind and headwind components were both 1 knot, which is relatively minimal and should not have significantly impacted the landing.
The total landing distance was 3,465 feet, which is 58% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the pilot executed a good approach and touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the pilot demonstrating good skills and control throughout the approach and touchdown phases. However, there is room for improvement in terms of touchdown speed and runway alignment.
