Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: wings not level and speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,455 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 427 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 16L at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (KSEA), with a takeoff distance of 1,185 meters, which was 33% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 152 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 8°C temperature and a 2-knot headwind at 180°. The enroute climb started overhead KSEA, where the aircraft climbed from 1,441 feet above sea level to 38,815 feet above sea level, an increase of 37,373 feet in 41 minutes, covering a distance of 293 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began overhead Weiser, Idaho, and lasted for 353 minutes, covering a distance of 2,767 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 41 miles northeast of Bocas del Toro, Panama, descending from 39,015 feet above sea level to 2,001 feet above sea level, a decrease of 37,014 feet in 18 minutes, covering a distance of 115 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started again 4 miles southeast of Anton, Panama, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 35 at Cap Scarlett R Martinez L Intl (MPSM) was made from the south, heading 345.0° at 3 nautical miles and 925 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 35 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 429 meters, which was 52% of the runway length. The touchdown speed was 116 knots, and the touchdown rate was excellent at -77 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.1 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 21°C temperature and a 1-knot headwind at 0°.
The total landing distance was 1,275 meters, and the runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took less than 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 3,189 nautical miles, taking 421 minutes, and the aircraft used 16,162 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at MPSM Cap Scarlett R Martinez L Intl, achieving a high score of 99.8%. The final approach to runway 35 was conducted from the south, with the aircraft heading 345.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and an altitude of 925 feet above ground level (agl).
The landing was executed smoothly, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 127 knots. The touchdown distance was also within acceptable limits at 429 meters, and the touchdown speed was 116 knots, which is considered good. The most impressive aspect of the landing was the touchdown rate, which was an excellent -77 feet per minute (fpm). This indicates that the aircraft touched down with minimal deceleration, reducing the risk of damage to the landing gear and the aircraft's overall structure.
However, there was a slight deviation from the ideal landing, as the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 3.1 meters from the centerline. This may have been due to a slight miscalculation of the aircraft's position or a minor deviation from the planned flight path.
The local weather conditions were favorable for the landing, with a temperature of 21°C and a wind speed of 2 knots at 0°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component and a headwind of 1 knot, which had a minimal impact on the aircraft's flight path.
The total landing distance was 1,275 meters, which is 52% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down and come to a stop within a relatively short distance. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable and controlled descent during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the aircraft touching down smoothly and coming to a stop within a short distance. The high score of 99.8% reflects the pilot's skill and expertise in executing a safe and controlled landing.
