Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,645 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 517 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, a Just Flight RJ85 CityJet, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KPHF Newport News Williamsburg International Airport. This process took approximately 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 02, with a takeoff distance of 881 meters, which accounted for 44% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 144 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 0°C and wind speeds of 20 knots at 338 degrees. The crosswind was 11 knots, while the headwind was 16 knots. The enroute climb started shortly after takeoff, with the aircraft ascending from 1,069 feet above sea level to 27,384 feet above sea level, an increase of 26,315 feet in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 115 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 1 mile southwest of Milford, Delaware, and lasted for 60 minutes, covering a distance of 378 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 3 miles north of Champlain, New York, descending from 26,966 feet above sea level to 1,121 feet above sea level, a decrease of 25,845 feet in 13 minutes, covering a distance of 43 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 29 at CYMX Montreal International (Mirabel) Airport was made from the east, with a heading of 272.0 degrees at 3 nautical miles and 853 feet above ground level. The landing was executed on runway 29, which had a length of 3,645 meters. The threshold height was well above the target, while the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 122 knots.
The touchdown point was 123 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 107 knots, which was considered good. However, the touchdown rate was hard at -406 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was also excellent. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of -8°C and wind speeds of 10 knots at 287 degrees, with a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 9 knots.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took approximately 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 543 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 106 minutes and a fuel consumption of 3,756 kilograms.
The aircraft, a Just Flight RJ85 CityJet, successfully landed at CYMX Montreal International (Mirabel) Airport, achieving a score of 87.0%. The final approach to runway 29 was conducted from the east, with a heading of 272.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and an altitude of 853 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with the touchdown point located 123 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 107 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate of -406 feet per minute (fpm) was considered hard, suggesting that the aircraft may have experienced a slight bounce or jolt upon touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -8°C and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 287°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 9 knots. These conditions were favorable for the landing, with the headwind helping to stabilize the aircraft's descent.
The runway length at CYMX Montreal International (Mirabel) Airport is 3,645 meters, providing a sufficient margin for the aircraft to come to a stop after touchdown. The total landing distance of 976 meters was 27% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll. The runway rollout alignment was also considered very good, suggesting that the aircraft was well under control during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a good touchdown speed and a short landing roll. However, the hard touchdown rate and slight overshoot of the touchdown zone may indicate areas for improvement in the pilot's technique or the aircraft's performance.
