Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: speed above the reference speed.
At the 500 ft gate: speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 6,474 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 636 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a short taxiing period from the parking to the runway, taking approximately 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna CJ4 Citation, then departed from runway 19 at KAMW Ames Municipal Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,977 feet, which is 35% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 126 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 61°F and a wind speed of 2 knots at 269°.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile south of KAMW Ames Municipal Airport. The climb started from an altitude of 1,886 feet above sea level and reached a maximum altitude of 19,585 feet above sea level, an increase of 17,699 feet in just 6 minutes. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 29 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase began 6 miles east of Melbourne, Iowa, and lasted for 20 minutes. During this period, the aircraft maintained a steady altitude and covered a distance of 134 nautical miles. The cruise phase was followed by an enroute descent, which started 1 mile east of Morrison, Illinois. The descent was from an altitude of 19,521 feet above sea level to 2,751 feet above sea level, a decrease of 16,770 feet in 11 minutes. The aircraft covered a distance of 53 nautical miles during this period.
The enroute level cruise phase was restarted 1 mile northeast of 56LL Wade Airport Waterman, Illinois, and lasted for 3 minutes. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 8 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 09 at KARR Aurora Municipal Airport was made from the west, with the aircraft heading 89.0° at an altitude of 1,278 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing on runway 09 at KARR Aurora Municipal Airport was characterized by a good threshold height, but the threshold speed was too high at 107 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 635 feet, but the touchdown speed was too fast at 106 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -296 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions during the landing were characterized by a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 2 knots at 270°.
The total landing distance was 2,160 feet, which is 33% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the taxiing to the parking from the runway took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 230 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 44 minutes. The aircraft used 2,913 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation successfully landed at KARR Aurora Municipal Airport, achieving a score of 95.6%. The aircraft approached the runway from the west, heading 89.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,278 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, aligning perfectly with the runway threshold.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed on runway 09, which has a length of 6,474 feet. The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was slightly too high at 107 knots. This indicates that the pilot may have been able to flare the aircraft more effectively to achieve a smoother touchdown. The touchdown distance of 635 feet was within acceptable limits, but the touchdown speed of 106 knots was slightly too fast.
The rate of descent during touchdown was fair at -296 feet per minute (fpm), suggesting that the pilot may have been able to control the aircraft's descent more effectively. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot had excellent control over the aircraft's direction and speed during the final approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from 270°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component and a slight tailwind of 2 knots. The total landing distance of 2,160 feet was 33% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
During the rollout phase, the aircraft maintained excellent alignment with the runway, indicating that the pilot had excellent control over the aircraft's direction and speed. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated good skills and control during the final approach and touchdown phases. However, there is room for improvement in terms of threshold speed and touchdown speed to achieve a more precise and controlled landing.
