Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,484 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,484 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 484 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 06 at LFAM Berck-sur-Mer Airfield, where the Beechcraft Baron G58 took off with a takeoff distance of 338 meters, which accounted for 62% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 86 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time were characterized by a temperature of 2 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots at 130 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it began its enroute climb from 1,018 feet above sea level to 5,958 feet, an increase of 4,940 feet in just 4 minutes, covering a distance of 9 nautical miles. This climb phase was followed by a level cruise that lasted for 48 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 155 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another climb phase, this time from 6,147 feet to 8,133 feet, an increase of 1,985 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles. Following this climb, the aircraft entered another level cruise phase, which lasted for 78 minutes and covered a distance of 261 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its final climb phase, which took it from 8,214 feet to 18,014 feet, an increase of 9,800 feet in just 9 minutes, covering a distance of 25 nautical miles. After this climb, the aircraft entered another level cruise phase, which lasted for 43 minutes and covered a distance of 153 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent phase, which took it from 18,100 feet to 3,729 feet, a decrease of 14,371 feet in just 16 minutes, covering a distance of 42 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 27 at LECU Madrid-Cuatro Vientos Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 279.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,463 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 27 was successful, with the aircraft touching down 52 meters beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 80 knots. The touchdown rate was good at -198 feet per minute, but the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 10.9 meters. The total landing distance was 671 meters, which accounted for 45% of the runway.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking 2 minutes to cover a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 655 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 207 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 180 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Beechcraft Baron G58 successfully landed at LECU Madrid-Cuatro Vientos Airport, achieving a score of 93.8%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 279.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,463 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was made to runway 27, which has a length of 1,484 meters.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 84 knots. The touchdown point was 52 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot. The touchdown speed of 80 knots was faster than the recommended speed, which may have contributed to the deviation from the centerline.
The touchdown rate of -198 feet per minute (fpm) was considered good, indicating a controlled descent. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.9 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the slightly fast touchdown speed. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 5°C, with a wind speed of 5 knots at 251°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots.
The total landing distance of 671 meters was 45% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 10.0 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the aircraft's momentum from the touchdown.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, but there were some minor deviations from the ideal landing parameters. The pilot's ability to maintain control and navigate the aircraft to a safe touchdown was demonstrated, despite the slightly fast touchdown speed and misaligned touchdown position.
