Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,739 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,739 m of the 2,495 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,061 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport, taking 7 minutes and covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 13L, with a takeoff distance of 1,754 meters, which was 47% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 169 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 13°C temperature and winds of 14 knots at 99 degrees. The crosswind was 7 knots, while the headwind was 12 knots. The enroute climb started overhead Vecses, Hungary, where the aircraft ascended from 1,417 feet above sea level to 35,249 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,833 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 110 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 2 miles north-east of Becej, Serbia, and lasted for 17 minutes, covering a distance of 120 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its descent 4 miles south of Zlatibor, Serbia, descending from 35,411 feet above sea level to 5,498 feet above sea level, a decrease of 29,913 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 73 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started again 11 miles south-east of Bileca, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its climb 9 miles north-west of Risan, Montenegro, ascending from 5,255 feet above sea level to 1,890 feet above sea level, an increase of 3,365 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 14 at Tivat Airport took place from the north-west, heading 136.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,850 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 14, which was 2,495 meters long, was slightly challenging, with the threshold height being well above the target and the threshold speed being too high at 167 knots.
The touchdown point was 644 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 132 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -215 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.7 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at Tivat Airport were 15°C temperature and winds of 14 knots at 180 degrees, with a crosswind of 9 knots and a headwind of 10 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,657 meters, which was 66% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The total flight distance was 327 nautical miles, taking 65 minutes, and the aircraft used 2,638 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed at LYTV Tivat Airport, but with some areas for improvement. The final approach was initiated from the north-west, heading 136.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,850 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 14, which has a length of 2,495 meters.
However, there were some discrepancies in the landing performance. The threshold height at 78 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been too high during the approach. Additionally, the threshold speed was too high at 167 knots, which could have contributed to the high touchdown speed. The touchdown point was 644 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed of 132 knots was slightly faster than desired.
The touchdown rate of -215 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, but could be improved. Furthermore, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.7 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the crosswind or headwind conditions. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C, wind speed of 14 knots at 180°, and a crosswind of 9 knots and headwind of 10 knots.
Despite these areas for improvement, the total landing distance of 1,657 meters was only 66% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was well under control during the rollout phase. Overall, while the landing was successful, there are opportunities for the pilots to refine their approach and landing techniques to achieve a more optimal performance.
