Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 6,201 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 6,201 ft of the 11,513 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,068 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 25R at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The takeoff distance was 5,970 feet, which accounted for 58% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 160 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 77°F, a wind speed of 4 knots at 329°, with a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 2 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 1 mile south east of Central City, Arizona, at an altitude of 2,146 feet above sea level. The climb continued to an altitude of 35,351 feet, an increase of 33,205 feet, in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 143 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then began 9 miles south of Saint Johns, Arizona, and lasted for 82 minutes, covering a distance of 1,422 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 11 miles south east of Webster Springs, West Virginia, and descended from an altitude of 34,455 feet to 5,997 feet, a decrease of 28,457 feet, in 18 minutes, covering a distance of 115 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another enroute level cruise, this time starting 1 mile south of Upperville Airport, Virginia, and lasting for 7 minutes, covering a distance of 21 nautical miles.
The final descent began 1 mile south east of Lovettsville, Virginia, and descended from an altitude of 6,002 feet to 1,575 feet, a decrease of 4,426 feet, in 6 minutes, covering a distance of 17 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 19L at Washington Dulles International Airport, flying from the north at a heading of 181.0°, at 4 nautical miles and 1,251 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 19L was successful, with the touchdown point being 710 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 129 knots, which was good, while the touchdown rate was fair at -263 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 41°F, a wind speed of 2 knots at 180°, with a crosswind of 0 knots and a headwind of 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 5,943 feet, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 7 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,728 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 152 minutes, with a total fuel consumption of 22,492 pounds.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at KIAD Washington Dulles International Airport on runway 19L, achieving a score of 94.0%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north, heading 181.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,251 feet above ground level (agl).
The final approach was executed with precision, with the aircraft touching down 710 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 129 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate of -263 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the aircraft could have been brought down more gently.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 41°F and a gentle headwind of 2 knots from the east. The crosswind component was negligible, at 0 knots. The runway length of 11,513 feet provided ample space for the aircraft to land and roll out safely.
The aircraft's alignment with the runway during touchdown and rollout was perfect, indicating a high degree of control and precision on the part of the pilots. The total landing distance of 5,943 feet was 52% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the aircraft touching down smoothly and rolling out safely. While there were some minor deviations from the target parameters, the pilots' skills and the aircraft's performance were sufficient to ensure a safe and controlled landing.
