Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 6,255 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 6,255 ft of the 11,513 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,834 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 20 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 08 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The takeoff distance was 4,345 feet, which accounted for 41% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 156 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 61°F and a wind speed of 3 knots at 90°.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 1 mile south of the Papago Army Heliport in Phoenix, Arizona. The climb took 20 minutes and covered a distance of 139 nautical miles, with the aircraft rising from an altitude of 2,176 feet above sea level to 35,150 feet. The enroute level cruise began 9 miles south of Saint Johns, Arizona, and lasted for 169 minutes, covering a distance of 1,396 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 4 miles west of Nettie, West Virginia, and took 37 minutes to complete, covering a distance of 161 nautical miles. The aircraft descended from an altitude of 35,503 feet to 1,579 feet, a decrease of 33,925 feet. The final approach to runway 01R at Washington Dulles International Airport was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 1.0° at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,255 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 01R was completed at a speed of 142 knots, which was slightly above the target speed. The touchdown point was 1,465 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown rate was good at -199 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 20 feet from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 46°F and a wind speed of 2 knots at 360°.
The total landing distance was 5,986 feet, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 28 feet from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 13 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,707 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 260 minutes. The aircraft used 22,390 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at KIAD Washington Dulles International Airport on runway 01R. The final approach was initiated from the south, with the aircraft heading 1.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,255 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was executed with a runway length of 11,513 feet, which provided a sufficient margin for the aircraft to come to a stop.
However, there were some minor deviations from the target parameters during the landing. The threshold height at 65 feet agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft was slightly higher than desired at the point of touchdown. Additionally, the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 150 knots, which may have contributed to the subsequent touchdown speed being a little fast at 142 knots.
The touchdown point was 1,465 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively significant deviation. The touchdown rate, however, was good at -199 feet per minute (fpm), indicating that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact of touchdown smoothly. The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 20 feet from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the final approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 46°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from 360°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind and a headwind of 2 knots, which did not significantly impact the landing. The total landing distance was 5,986 feet, which is 52% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 28 feet from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the rollout.
Overall, while there were some minor deviations from the target parameters, the landing was executed safely and smoothly, with the aircraft coming to a stop within a reasonable distance from the runway threshold.
