Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,611 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,611 m of the 1,932 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 871 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 12 at YBAS Alice Springs Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,560 meters, which accounted for 64% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 141 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 28 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots at 330 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the tailwind was 3 knots. The enroute climb started 1 mile south east of YBAS Alice Springs Airport and continued for 22 minutes, covering a distance of 147 nautical miles. The aircraft climbed from an altitude of 2,785 feet above sea level to 38,322 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,537 feet.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 4 miles south west of YLUC Lucy Creek Airport. This phase lasted for 42 minutes and covered a distance of 331 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 33 miles east of BHT Brighton Downs Airport and lasted for 21 minutes, covering a distance of 114 nautical miles. The aircraft descended from an altitude of 38,233 feet above sea level to 2,311 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,922 feet.
The final approach to runway 04 at YLRE Longreach Airport was made from the south west, with a heading of 46.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,680 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 04 was successful, with the touchdown point being 377 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 136 knots, which was good, while the touchdown rate was hard at -428 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 28 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 17 knots at 47 degrees. The crosswind was 0 knots, while the headwind was 17 knots. The total landing distance was 1,453 meters, which accounted for 75% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight distance was 599 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 100 minutes. The aircraft used 4,136 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at YLRE Longreach Airport, achieving an overall score of 80.8%. The final approach to runway 04 was conducted from the south west, with a heading of 46.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,680 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with the touchdown point located 377 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 136 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate of -428 feet per minute (fpm) was considered hard, suggesting that the aircraft may have experienced a slight bounce or jolt upon touchdown.
The threshold height at 125 feet agl was found to be excessively above the target, while the threshold speed of 148 knots was slightly above the target. Despite these minor deviations, the runway touchdown alignment was deemed very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 28°C and a headwind of 17 knots at 47°. The crosswind component was negligible, with a speed of 0 knots. The total landing distance of 1,453 meters was 75% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
During the rollout phase, the aircraft maintained perfect alignment with the runway, indicating a high degree of control and stability. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft demonstrating good control and stability throughout the approach and touchdown phases. However, the hard touchdown rate and slightly above-target threshold speed suggest areas for improvement in future landings.
