Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,045 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 586 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KONP Newport Municipal Airport took approximately 4 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The Cessna C172 then departed from runway 34, utilizing 286 meters, or 18% of the runway, to achieve liftoff at a speed of 59 knots. Local weather conditions at the time of departure included a temperature of 14°C, with a 10-knot wind blowing from 230°, resulting in a crosswind of 8 knots and a tailwind of 6 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to 8,011 feet above sea level, it covered 18 nautical miles in 11 minutes, increasing its altitude by 7,326 feet from the initial 686 feet above sea level. The enroute level cruise phase began approximately 1 mile south of Siletz, Oregon, and lasted for 83 minutes, covering a distance of 142 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a series of descents and level cruises, navigating through various checkpoints, including 49WA Cougar Mountain Airfield and Fife Heights, before entering the final approach phase to runway 14R at KBFI Boeing Field King County International Airport.
The final approach was initiated from the northwest, with the aircraft heading 148.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,260 feet above ground level. The landing was executed with a touchdown point 147 meters beyond the touchdown zone, at a speed of 49 knots and a smooth touchdown rate of -127 feet per minute. The total landing distance was 811 meters, or 27% of the runway. Following a perfect runway rollout alignment, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, covering less than 1 nautical mile in 3 minutes. The total flight distance was 215 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 130 minutes and a fuel consumption of 62 kilograms.
The final approach to runway 14R at KBFI Boeing Field King County International Airport from the north west was executed with precision, with the aircraft maintaining a heading of 148.0° at 4 nm and 1,260 ft above ground level. The approach quality was excellent, with a good threshold height achieved. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the desired level at 73 kt, indicating a need for adjustment in the approach configuration.
As the aircraft touched down on the runway, the touchdown point was 147 m beyond the touchdown zone, which was slightly off-center but still within acceptable limits. The touchdown speed of 49 kt was well within the desired range, and the touchdown rate of -127 fpm was smooth, indicating a well-controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, with the aircraft maintaining a precise centerline alignment. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 16 °C and a wind of 3 kt at 317°, contributed to a relatively calm and stable environment for the landing.
The total landing distance of 811 m was 27% of the runway length, which was within the acceptable range. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, with the aircraft maintaining a precise centerline alignment throughout the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was executed with a high degree of precision and control, resulting in a score of 95.0%.
