Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,452 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 577 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-900, then departed from runway 20 at SARC Corrientes Airport. The takeoff distance was 410 meters, which accounted for 21% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 154 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 120 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 2 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 2 miles south of SARC Corrientes Airport and climbing to an altitude of 36,125 feet above sea level. This climb, which covered a distance of 196 nautical miles, took 29 minutes and involved an increase in altitude of 34,899 feet from the initial altitude of 1,226 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 6 miles northwest of SA5N Federal La Angelita Airport in the Entre Rios Province of Argentina. This cruise phase lasted for 155 minutes and covered a distance of 1,422 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 20 miles east of Rio Grande in the Tierra del Fuego Province of Argentina. The descent, which covered a distance of 77 nautical miles, took 15 minutes and involved a decrease in altitude of 34,001 feet from the initial altitude of 35,558 feet.
The final approach to runway 25 at SAWH Malvinas Argentinas Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 266.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,467 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with the touchdown point being 153 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 127 knots, which was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate was -158 feet per minute, indicating a good rate of descent. The runway touchdown alignment was also very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 250 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 3 knots. The total landing distance was 1,344 meters, which accounted for 55% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled landing.
The final taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,703 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 208 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 11,927 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-900 aircraft successfully landed at SAWH Malvinas Argentinas Airport, achieving a high score of 98.6%. The final approach to runway 25 was conducted from the east, with a heading of 266.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,467 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 136 knots. The touchdown point was located 153 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown speed of 127 knots was within acceptable limits, and the touchdown rate of -158 feet per minute (fpm) was also good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 10°C, with a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 250°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 3 knots, which did not appear to significantly impact the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,344 meters was 55% of the available runway length of 2,452 meters. This indicates that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance, and the runway rollout alignment was perfect, suggesting that the pilot maintained good control of the aircraft during the landing roll.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good control and handling characteristics.
