Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 7,558 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 7,558 ft of the 10,005 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,257 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 14 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 36C at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (KCLT) in Charlotte, North Carolina. The takeoff distance was 4,356 feet, which was 43% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 158 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 330 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 4 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 2 miles north of KCLT and reaching an altitude of 36,161 feet above sea level (asl) after climbing 34,403 feet in 23 minutes and covering a distance of 135 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 3 miles north of Grundy, Virginia, and lasted for 25 minutes. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 180 nautical miles. The cruise phase was followed by a descent, which began 6 miles south of Danville, Ohio, and resulted in a decrease of 23,338 feet in altitude in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 109 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started overhead Newport Woods Airport (9MI2) in Newport, Michigan, and lasted for 5 minutes, covering a distance of 17 nautical miles. This was followed by another descent, which began 2 miles south of Canton, Michigan, and resulted in a decrease of 10,122 feet in altitude in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 22R at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (KDTW) was made from the north-east, with a heading of 206.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,262 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was made on a runway length of 10,005 feet, with a threshold height of 84 feet agl, which was significantly above the target. The threshold speed was good at 141 knots.
The touchdown point was 1,885 feet beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 132 knots, which was good. However, the touchdown rate was very hard at -537 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 40 feet from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 88 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 230 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 4 knots.
The total landing distance was 7,286 feet, which was 73% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 32 feet from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 15 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 460 nautical miles, taking 117 minutes, and the aircraft used 10,406 pounds of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (KDTW) on runway 22R. The final approach was initiated from the northeast, heading 206.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,262 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good threshold speed of 141 knots, which is within the acceptable range for a safe landing.
However, the threshold height at 84 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating a slight deviation from the ideal approach path. The touchdown point was located 1,885 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a notable distance. The touchdown speed of 132 knots was within the acceptable range, but the touchdown rate of -537 feet per minute (fpm) was considered very hard, indicating a potentially rough landing.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 40 feet from the centreline, which could have contributed to the hard touchdown rate. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 88°F and a wind speed of 4 knots from 230°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots, which is relatively favorable for landing.
The total landing distance of 7,286 feet was 73% of the available runway length, indicating a relatively long landing roll. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 32 feet from the centreline, which could have contributed to the overall landing performance. Overall, while the landing was successful, there were some notable deviations from the ideal approach and landing parameters that warrant further analysis and improvement.
