Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,341 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 532 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an ATR 72, then departed from runway 27 at SAZN Presidente Peron Airport. The takeoff distance was 824 meters, which accounted for 32% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 122 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 7 knots from a direction of 270 degrees. This resulted in a headwind of 7 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, which started overhead SAZN Presidente Peron Airport in Neuquen Province, Argentina. The climb took 17 minutes and covered a distance of 42 nautical miles, with the aircraft ascending from 1,715 feet above sea level to 20,291 feet above sea level, a total increase of 18,576 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 29 minutes and covered a distance of 113 nautical miles. This phase began 40 miles south of Plottier in Neuquen Province, Argentina. The aircraft then started its enroute descent, which began 11 miles east of Comallo in Rio Negro Province, Argentina. The descent took 17 minutes and covered a distance of 48 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 20,227 feet above sea level to 4,147 feet above sea level, a total decrease of 16,080 feet.
The final approach to runway 29 at SAZS San Carlos De Bariloche Airport was made from the southeast, with the aircraft heading 298.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,361 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 29, which had a length of 2,341 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 123 knots.
The touchdown point was 109 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 110 knots, which was a little fast. However, the touchdown rate was good at -171 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.3 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 9 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 50 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 5 knots and a tailwind of 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 851 meters, which accounted for 36% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 10.0 meters from the centerline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 23 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 208 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 70 minutes. The aircraft used 717 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The ATR 72 aircraft successfully landed at SAZS San Carlos De Bariloche Airport, achieving a score of 94.9%. The final approach to runway 29 was initiated from the south east, with a heading of 298.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,361 feet above ground level.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 109 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. However, the touchdown speed of 110 knots was slightly above the target speed, indicating that the pilots may have been able to make adjustments to achieve a smoother touchdown. The touchdown rate of -171 feet per minute was considered good, indicating that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact of landing smoothly.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 9°C and a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 50°. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a tailwind of 2 knots, which may have contributed to the slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position by 10.3 meters from the centerline.
The total landing distance of 851 meters was 36% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 10.0 meters from the centerline, indicating that the pilots may have had some difficulty maintaining a straight course during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good control and handling during the approach and landing phases. However, there are some minor areas for improvement, including the touchdown speed and runway alignment during the rollout phase.
