Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 500 ft gate: off the centreline and speed below the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,399 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,399 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 266 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The 2.47 G arrival is the firm side of smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a quick taxi from the parking area to the runway, taking less than a minute and covering less than a nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna C172, then departed from runway 34 at LPVL Vilar de Luz Airfield. The takeoff distance was 533 meters, which accounted for 41% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 68 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 1 knot from 269°.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airfield, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead LPVL Vilar de Luz Airfield and Maia. The climb took the aircraft from 1,150 feet above sea level to 4,380 feet, an increase of 3,230 feet in just 5 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then began overhead Sao Mamede de Infesta, lasting 12 minutes and covering 21 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 1 mile northeast of Avanca, where the aircraft descended from 4,182 feet to 2,222 feet, a decrease of 1,960 feet in 3 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then resumed 2 miles east of Murtosa, lasting 3 minutes and covering 5 nautical miles. Another descent started overhead Esgueira, where the aircraft descended from 1,586 feet to 349 feet, a decrease of 1,237 feet in 3 minutes, covering 3 nautical miles.
The final enroute level cruise began overhead Ilhavo, lasting 4 minutes and covering 3 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 35 at LPAV São Jacinto Airfield, approaching from the south at a heading of 350.0° and 2 nautical miles from the airfield. The landing was made on runway 35, which had a length of 1,399 meters. The threshold height was significantly above the target, but the threshold speed was a little below target at 54 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 263 meters, and the touchdown speed was also good at 54 knots. However, the touchdown rate was very heavy at -773 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.0 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions remained the same, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 1 knot from 270°.
The total landing distance was 577 meters, which accounted for 41% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 49 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 36 minutes. The aircraft used 15 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna C172 aircraft successfully landed at LPAV São Jacinto Airfield, but with some notable areas for improvement. The final approach was conducted from the south, heading 350.0° at 2 nautical miles and 376 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 35, which has a length of 1,399 meters.
The threshold height at 85 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been higher than desired at the point of touchdown. However, the threshold speed was a little below the target at 54 knots, suggesting that the pilot may have been able to maintain a more controlled descent. The touchdown distance of 263 meters was good, and the touchdown speed of 54 knots was also within acceptable limits.
Unfortunately, the touchdown rate was very heavy at -773 feet per minute (fpm), which may indicate that the pilot may have been able to flare the aircraft more effectively to reduce the rate of descent. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.0 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach or during the landing roll.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind of 1 knot at 270°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, and there was no headwind component. The total landing distance of 577 meters was 41% of the runway length, which is within acceptable limits.
During the rollout, the aircraft's alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft and bring it to a stop in a safe and controlled manner. Overall, while there were some areas for improvement, the pilot demonstrated good skills and control during the landing, and the aircraft was able to touch down safely on the runway.
