Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 640 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 640 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 158 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 04 at EDCX Flugplatz Purkshof, a small airfield in Germany. The Cessna Skyhawk aircraft accelerated down the 716-meter runway, covering 64% of its length, before lifting off at a speed of 60 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 16°C and a gentle wind blowing at 1 knot from a direction of 269°, resulting in a negligible crosswind and tailwind.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airfield, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead the town of Roevershagen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. The aircraft climbed from an altitude of 553 feet above sea level to 1,094 feet, an increase of 541 feet, in just 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. This rapid ascent was followed by a level cruise, which began overhead EDCX Flugplatz Purkshof Rostock and lasted for 12 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 22 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 1 mile northwest of EDCR Rerik-Zweedorf Airfield Rerik, where the aircraft began its descent from an altitude of 927 feet above sea level to 179 feet, a decrease of 748 feet, in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 07 at EDCR Rerik-Zweedorf Airfield, flying from the west at a heading of 75.0° and an altitude of 142 feet above ground level.
The landing was executed smoothly, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 45 knots and a distance of 156 meters, which was 49% of the runway length. The touchdown rate was perfect at -38 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.3 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C and a gentle wind blowing at 1 knot from a direction of 270°, resulting in a negligible crosswind and a slight tailwind.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking less than 1 minute to cover a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 26 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 17 minutes, during which the aircraft used 9 kilograms of fuel. Overall, the flight was executed smoothly and efficiently, with good weather conditions and a well-executed landing.
The Cessna Skyhawk successfully landed at EDCR Rerik-Zweedorf Airfield, achieving a high score of 98.1%. The aircraft approached the runway from the west, heading 75.0° at an altitude of 142 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway. The pilot executed a precise final approach, taking into account the local weather conditions, which included a temperature of 15°C and a gentle wind of 1 kt from 270°.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 07 with a speed of 55 kt, which was slightly below the target threshold speed. However, this did not affect the overall performance of the landing. The touchdown distance of 156 meters was considered good, and the touchdown speed of 45 kt was also within acceptable limits. The most impressive aspect of the landing was the touchdown rate, which was a perfect -38 feet per minute (fpm).
Although the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.3 meters from the centerline, this did not significantly impact the overall performance of the landing. The total landing distance of 316 meters was 49% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the Cessna Skyhawk's landing at EDCR Rerik-Zweedorf Airfield was a success, with the pilot demonstrating excellent flying skills and adherence to standard operating procedures. The high score of 98.1% reflects the precision and control exhibited during the landing, making it a commendable achievement.
